I have not only written numerous articles on SODA over the years, but have written extensively about DIET SODA as well. And to be very specific, I have repeatedly shown you that Diet Sodas DO NOT help people with long term weight loss. In fact, numerous peer-reviewed studies have shown that Diet Soda actually causes weight gain. Once you understand that MSG and NUTRASWEET (Aspartame) are both excitotoxins, and excitotoxins are known to cause OBESITY, you should begin to wonder how this study's authors got the results they did. Truth be known, they got it in the same fashion that the majority of our EVIDENCE-BASED MEDICINE is gathered in this country ---- someone paid for it.
When you start to look at this research, almost immediately you read that, "the study was fully funded by The American Beverage Association". Furthermore, the study's lead author, Dr. John C. Peters, "received consulting fees from The Coca-Cola Company outside of the submitted work." He was not the only author to do so. This is no different than a few years ago when the American Corn Growers told 60 Minutes that HIGH FRUCTOSE CORN SYRUP was the same as white sugar. By the way, who is John C. Peters? He is an Associate Professor and Chief Strategy Officer at the University of Colorado's Anschutz Wellness Center. We learn from the university's website that Peters, "spent more than 25 years in research and development with the Proctor & Gamble Company, where he conducted and managed research, technology and product development programs in areas including nutrition, obesity, diabetes, metabolism........".
Riddle me this Batman. How in the world does one whose life work can be summed up as, "involved in a number of public health initiatives aimed at promoting healthy lifestyle behaviors for the prevention and management of obesity and diabetes," be taking money from Coca Cola and telling us that Diet Soda is better for us than water? You're right; it is a terrible CONFLICT-OF-INTEREST. But hey; the medical research field is littered with them. What's new?

Having "Coke" as a paid sponsor for the NIH's "Red Dress Collection, Healthy Heart Campaign" is, like so many similar ventures, more than a little bit incestuous. It would be sort of like inviting Dr. Hannibal Lector to be a paid spokesman for MAC (Mothers Against Cannibalism). Or leaving Phillip Morris in charge of creating anti-smoking ads. Or maybe it would be like allowing over-paid government bureaucrats to define things like "PATIENT CENTERED CARE" or "EVIDENCE-BASED MEDICINE". Wait; the later two are already taking place. I guess that truth really is stranger than fiction. Speaking of "truth", let's take just a moment to discuss the truth about Diet Soda and Diabetes.
The truth is, there is a strong link between Heart Disease and Diabetes. The dirty little secret that Coca Cola Corp and other soda manufacturers do not want you to know is that you are dramatically more likely to have Vascular Events (strokes), Metabolic Syndrome (pre-diabetes), and Diabetes, if you drink Diet Soda as opposed to regular soda. That's correct. Re-read that if you passed by on cruise control without fully grasping the implications. But the hits keep coming. When it comes to Diet Soda, Diabetes, Strokes, and Metabolic Syndrome are just the tip of the iceberg. Follow along as I show you a few more reasons that you don't want to even think about putting this stuff in your body.
A FEW MORE REASONS TO AVOID
DIET SODA LIKE THE PLAGUE
Besides that, researchers from the University of Minnesota recently showed that drinking a single Diet Soda per day increased one's chance of developing both Metabolic Syndrome and Diabetes (HERE) by a whopping 36% (Metabolic Syndrome includes any three of the four following: high blood pressure, elevated levels of blood sugar, high cholesterol, and obesity). And if that weren't bad enough, a joint study done by the Ivy League's Columbia University and the University of Miami showed that a daily Diet Soda ups your chances of "Vascular Accidents" (strokes) by well over 40% (drinkers of regular soda showed no increased risk of strokes). But hold on to your seat because we are just getting started.
Diet Soda has been associated with various neurological disorders, including CHRONIC PAIN, FIBROMYALGIA, DEPRESSION, and MIGRAINE HEADACHES. Furthermore, it is my opinion (backed by research) that the number one cause of OSTEOPOROSIS in America is probably DRINKING TOO MUCH SODA. Click on the links to find out why. Diet Soda does the same thing to teeth that it does to bones. This is why a recent study in General Dentistry that compared the teeth of Coke-heads, Meth-heads, and regular consumers of Diet Soda, found that the teeth were the same in all three groups ---- horrendous. Indistinguishable from the other groups.
I could go on and on, but hopefully you get the point. You are not doing yourself any favors by consuming Diet Soda. If you are putting this form of poison known as an "EXCITOTOXIN" into your body, you headed down a short pathway to chronic illness and weight gain. What do I recommend you drink instead of Diet Soda? That's easy. Drink filtered water.
MSG, ASPARTAME, AND OBESITY
(Or Why in the Name of Corn on the Cob is there MSG in Vaccines?)

At 150-days old, MSG rats presented massive abdominal fat deposition, hypertriglyceridemia, hyperinsulinemia, glucose intolerance and high plasma levels of malondialdehyde (MDA), a lipid peroxidation marker." "Monosodium glutamate (MSG) is a widely-used flavor enhancer and stabilizer in ready-made or packaged foods. MSG, Mono Sodium Glutamate, Mono Potassium Glutamate, Disodium Inositate, Glutamate, Guanylate, Glutamic Acid, Vegetable (legitimate "vegetables" will be listed by name), Protein (any kind of protein found on a food label “list of ingredients” is MSG), Extract, Gelatin, Hydrolyzed, Autolyzed, Sodium Casienate, Natural Flavor, Artificial Flavor, Flavoring or Flavored, Textured, Nutrient, Enzymes, Yeast (all kinds), Senomyx, Dextrin, Maltodextrin, Stock, Broth, Bullion (pure, 100% MSG), Whey, Isolate, Concentrate, Modified , Soy Sauce, Seasonings, Fermented, Starch, Cornstarch, Fructose, Lecithin, Carrageenan (sea weed / algae ---- big in Japan), Spices (legitimate spices, pepper, paprika, cloves, etc, will be labeled as such), Enzymes, Solids, Annatto, Gluten, and many others.
It gets crazier from here. If you look at the list found on the "Ingredients of Vaccines" page, which is found on the freakiest / scariest page of the CDC's entire website (HERE), you'll find among other fun things such as MERCURY (thimerosal), ALUMINUM, and FORMALDEHYDE; MSG (it's said to be a "stabilizer"). Once, however, you begin to understand what MSG does to the brain (make absolutely sure to watch Neurosurgeon, Russell Blaylock's video at the bottom of the page), you might think twice about following governmental VACCINATION recommendations (HERE is my information on Flu Vaccines). All the more troubling in light of what we know about 'MSG Obese' rats. MSG-Obese rats? Huh?
You see, not only have we known for decades that MSG causes behavioral problems (see quote at top of the page), but scientists are well aware that it causes OBESITY. How does MSG cause obesity? By affecting certain areas of the brain, most particularly the HYPOTHALAMUS (one of the single most important parts of the entire brain). This craziness is explained perfectly in the title of a 1997 study from the Department of Physiology of the University of Sao Paulo, Brazil ---- "Monosodium Glutamate (MSG)-Obese Rats Develop Glucose Intolerance and Insulin Resistance".
Think about it for a moment; this is one heck of a combination. An intolerance to Glucose means that higher levels of blood sugar are going to give you such a wide array of physical and mental problems I can't even begin to mention them all here. But it doesn't end here; resistance to insulin means that it takes more and more insulin to get the glucose out of your blood and into your cells, leaving you with the dangerous combination of perpetually high blood sugar and perpetually high insulin levels (HERE or HERE). As we move forward, let me hit you with a few recent study titles showing the phenomenon of MSG or Hypothalamus Rats --- the process that scientists use to purposefully induce obesity.

Since rats are the test-animal of choice for doctors studying drugs; when scientists need obese rats for their drug studies, and since there are no naturally occurring breed of rats, they must create their own. How do they do this? They inject them with MSG shortly after birth, scrambling their hypothalamus and areas of the brain that control satiety (the ability to sense 'fullness' after eating). Thus, we now have rats that eat and eat and then eat some more, gaining weight like there's no tomorrow simply because they never feel full. If you go to PubMed and start searching terms like MSG Obese Rats, MSG Obesity, or any dozens of others (there are just about as many terms for this as there are names for MSG), you will find hundreds upon hundreds of studies similar to what you are seeing today --- some of them dating back to when I was in grade school (and I'M A GEEZER). What does the MSG industry have to say about this?
MSGFacts dot com, the official site of MSG manufacturers, touts this sort of thing as one of the added benefits of MSG. That's right folks, this is how they spin MSG's addictive qualities. "Studies have found that adding MSG to certain foods, such as soup and mashed potatoes, has been successful in increasing the food intake of institutionalized elderly populations." Yay! Give individuals in the old-folks home MSG-laced grub so that they'll eat more of it. You can bet your bottom dollar that the MSG manufacturers are also aware of the evidence linking MSG to almost every neurological problem you can name (PARKINSON'S, ALZHEIMER'S, ADD / ADHD, DEPRESSION, MIGRAINE HEADACHES, ASTHMA, DIABETES, FIBROMYALGIA as well as a wide variety of GUT HEALTH problems).
So, whether you are a lab rat or a person trying to maintain your weight; just remember that MSG is going to cause you to gain weight in at least three different ways.
- It is going to cause an increase in insulin levels (INSULIN RESISTANCE) while leaving you less sensitive to glucose (meaning you need more and more blood sugar to achieve the effect your body requires).
- It is going to scramble certain parts of your brain, particularly your hypothalamus, often times leading to various forms of SYMPATHETIC DOMINANCE.
- MSG and processed foods are extremely and purposefully addictive. When you add to this the fact that much of the foods that contain MSG could best be described as "junk food" or "junk carbs," think for a moment about the exponential nature of the ADDICTIVE POTENTIAL.
By the way, Glutamate (the most abundant neurotransmitter in the body) is intimately related to the amino acid Aspartate, which Aspartame is made from. Aspartame causes the exact same brain lesions as does MSG. This is why current research has shown for decades (plural) that DIET SODA WILL ACTUALLY MAKE YOU FATTER (much fatter) than regular soda. Truthfully, this is the sort of information which, if you are breathing, have a pulse, and care about your family, you should know about. WHICH SODA IS BETTER.....
DIET OR REGULAR?
REGULAR SODA is crazy high in white sugar. Regular consumption of white sugar can cause a myriad of health problems by ruining your body's ability to CONTROL ITS BLOOD SUGAR LEVELS. In fact, it seems that every study coming out about the dangers of PROCESSED SUGAR (particularly HFCS) are freakier than the study that came out before it. This is scary considering the explosion of Diabetes here in America and the fact that studies are saying that for those in the 15 - 25 age group; their #1 source of calories is soda (HERE). But despite the problems that regular soda creates, it seems that diet soda is worse --- possibly much worse.
A large European study of over 15,000 subjects that was published this week in the medical journal Diabetologia, said that just one can (12 oz) of regular, sugar-sweetened soda a day increased one's chances of developing Type II Diabetes by 22%. However, if that drink is a diet drink ("artificially-sweetened") your chances of developing Type II Diabetes increase an additional 30 points to an astounding 52%. In the words of the immortal Harry Caray, "Holy Cow"! But truthfully, you should not be surprised. Clear back in October of 2011 I wrote about DIET SODA, using a study by Dr. Sharon Fowler of the University of Texas Health Science Center.
By now, everyone knows that sugar makes people fat, but a large review of 26 years of patient data found that people who drink diet soft drinks were more likely to become overweight than those who drank regular sodas. Not only that, but the more diet sodas they drank, the higher their risk of becoming overweight or obese - 65 percent more likely for each diet drink per day! The findings, the latest from the long-term San Antonio Heart Study, took even the researchers by surprise as they found that regular soft drinks had significantly less connection with serious weight gain than did diet soda.
WHY DIET SODAS CAUSE OBESITY
Aspartame is arguably one of the largest cause of health problems in America. It is sold under the brand names: NutraSweet, Equal, Spoonful, and Equal-Measure, and used to sweeten thousands of "food" products. But how does a chemical that has no calories cause one to get fat? It's really quite easy to understand.
Like MSG, aspartame is an excitotoxin. Excitotoxins cross the blood-brain barrier unrestricted, and contribute to all manner of neurological disorders. They attack the part of the brain that regulates HORMONE PRODUCTION. Among other things, this causes HYPOTHYROIDISM, a condition which affects at least 10% of the American population, which slows the metabolism. But that's not all.
When you ingest aspartame (a known liver toxin) it is absorbed from the intestines and passes immediately to the liver for detox. The liver breaks down aspartame to its toxic components - phenylalanine, aspartic acid, formaldehyde, and methanol (wood alcohol). This process requires a lot of energy from the liver which means there will be less energy remaining in the liver cells. This means the liver cells will have less energy for fat metabolism, which results in fat storage. Excess fat may build up inside the liver cells causing "fatty liver". When this starts to occur, it is extremely difficult to lose weight.
Although it contains no calories, aspartame causes causes DYSGLYCEMIA (unstable blood sugar levels), which increases the appetite, causes high levels of blood insulin, and causes the sugar cravings that many people (particularly women) would compare to a crack addiction. INSULIN is a storage hormone that moves sugar out of the blood and into the cells to be burned or stored ----- as fat.
Let me leave you with a little tidbit from the Congressional Record, Senate, S - 5511, May 7, l985. "Aspartame has been demonstrated to inhibit the carbohydrate-induced synthesis of the neurotransmitter serotonin (Wurtman affidavit). Serotonin blunts the sensation of craving carbohydrates and this is part of the body's feedback system that helps limit consumption of carbohydrate to appropriate levels. Its inhibition by aspartame could lead to the anomalous result of a diet product causing increased consumption of carbohydrates." Do you think that carbohydrates can make you fat? To answer this one, ask yourself a simple question: How does one fatten a beef? I grew up on a Kansas farm, and can assure you that carbohydrates (grain, sorghum, molasses, etc) is the only way to get the job done! But let's explore this "Serotonin" thing just a little bit more. Listen to what Ralph Walton, MD, says about aspartame and its effect on serotonin levels.
Food seeking behavior and satiety are driven by an area of the brain known as the hypothalamus. Stimulation of the medial hypothalamus in a laboratory rat leads to eating. Stimulation of the lateral hypothalamus leads to satiety and cessation of eating. Placing a lesion in the lateral hypothalamus produces an obese rat. The lateral hypothalamus is driven by serotonin. I believe that consuming large amounts of aspartame decreases the availability of serotonin and is thus analogous to placing a lesion in the lateral hypothalamus. Although much of this work is recent, clinical suggestions that aspartame can lead to paradoxical increased appetite date back to Blunder's work of 1986. An evolving view in modern psychiatry is that although depression, obsessive compulsive disorder, panic disorder, impulse control disorders, and eating disorders have historically been viewed as separate entities, in fact they should be viewed as a continuum of disorders all involving some degree of dysregulation of serotonin. I believe that at this time there is overwhelming evidence that aspartame contributes to this dysregulation.
And for those who may have been interested, approximately 90% of the body's serotonin is manufactured in the Gut (HERE). Poor GUT HEALTH, means that you will not be making the serotonin your body needs to feel 'normal'. Odds are you will be labeled with DEPRESSION, and all bets are off from here on out.
