REX'S CHIROPRACTIC MIRACLE
"The nervous system controls and coordinates all organs and structures of the human body." Page Four of the 29th Edition of Gray's Anatomy
I had a patient come in today that I had not seen in about four years. Just like the first time, he hobbled into the office with excruciating low back pain. After the adjustment, I managed to talk him out of a quick testimonial.
When he came in to see me four years ago, I examined him, X-rayed his low back, and learned that he had never been to a chiropractor before. I not only found areas of subluxation in his low back where he was having pain, but I found areas of subluxation in his neck as well. I adjusted his spine, and sent him home to ice, and then return in a couple of days to see his films and get another adjustment. Everything seemed so routine that I never really thought anything about it.
Rex came back in for his Report of Findings a couple of days later, and the first question out of his mouth when I walked into the room was, “What does chiropractic have to do with the ears?” We have lots of patients who, after they get adjusted, report some degree of improvement in their hearing or more commonly in the fact that their ears are no longer plugged. Still not thinking much of the situation, I showed him my trusty MEDICAL NERVE CHART (copyright 1957) that hangs on the wall of every room in my office, and explained how branches of nerves from the cervical spine connect to nerves that come directly off of the brain. When it all works properly, it allows you to hear. He preceded to tell me an amazing story.
After his first adjustment, he went home and turned on his TV. He could actually hear it. He realized that his hearing had returned after 42 years of almost complete deafness (he could not carry on a conversation in a vehicle unless he was looking at you). When I adjusted him, I had utterly no idea that he was deaf — only that his neck was out of place and that some of the vertebrae were not moving like they should. I asked him how we conversed in the office a few days prior, and he told me that he was a lip reader. I never did check his hearing on the initial examination, and figured his hearing was like lots of other people I treat --- poor.
He told me that he had gone deaf not too long after car accident that occurred when he was 18 years old. Because he had never in his life had neck pain, no one ever put two and two together.
After I adjusted Rex today for his low back pain (four years after our initial meeting), I had to ask him if he could still hear. He told me that he could hear a normal conversation from 100 yards away. I would love to take credit for this incredible miracle of chiropractic and tell you that it was because of my superior skill and intellect. The truth is, I did not even realize that he was deaf. Rex is an accomplished lip reader! Never forget that nerve interference can cause all sorts of problems in the body besides pain.
Written by Dr. Schierling as per an interview with Rex Mitchell in the summer of 2011. Written permission was granted to post this Testimonial. Interestingly enough, we have had a few similar experiences with patients and smelling. Joy (you can check out her Video Testimonial HERE), had Chronic Headaches for decades. I used to adjust her all the time, because it was the only thing that would really bring her relief. It's just that the adjustments would never last more than a day or two. She was one of my original TISSUE REMODELING patients over a decade ago, and after her very first treatment, her sense of smell came back in its entirety ---- after 30 years of not.
A MEDICAL DOCTOR'S AUTOPSIES
As time went on, these charts became more impressive and technologically advanced. When I first got into practice, I really wanted a neuropathalator in my office, but was not ready to part with the several thousand bucks that it would have cost me. These were an electric, automated version of the chart at the top. If you pressed a button on the right of the chart (for example; L3), everything controlled by the nerve from the Third Lumbar Vertebral nerve level would light up. I am glad that I did not spend that money. Now we have INTERACTIVE NERVE CHARTS for computers. Same principle, newer technology. The real question, however, is how accurate are these charts?
This question is simple to answer. Since the 1800's, doctors have known which spinal nerves control what organs, glands, and muscles. In fact, every single medical student, dentist, nurse, and chiropractor learns this information in extreme detail in their very first year of professional school. So why don't more doctors look to the nerve system for answers instead of prescribing drugs for everything (HERE)? After all, you cannot fix a mechanical / electrical problem in your car by using a chemical. What would make one think that it would work in a human body?
If you have followed my blog for very long, you realize very quickly that there is BIG MONEY IN PRESCRIPTION DRUGS. It seems like far too many of today's doctors are acting more like glorified PHARMACEUTICAL REPS than healers. Interestingly enough, however, it was an early medical doctor who, nearly a century ago, scientifically "proved" one of the foundational principles of chiropractic. The spine houses the nerve system in bones called vertebrate. When these vertebrate have poor alignment or motion in relationship to each other, that specific area of the nerve system is adversely affected. Adversely affect a nerve, and you will adversely affect whatever that nerve controls. This is what chiropractors have always referred to as "Subluxation".
THE WORK OF HENRY WINSOR, MD
• In 1921, the Medical Profession Validated Chiropractic
Henry Winsor, a medical doctor in Haverford , Pennsylvania asked the question: "Chiropractors claim that by adjusting one vertebra, they can relieve stomach troubles and ulcers; by adjusting another, menstrual cramps; and by adjusting others, conditions such as kidney diseases, constipation, heart disease, thyroid conditions, and lung disease may resolve – but how?" Dr. Winsor decided to investigate this new science and art of healing --- chiropractic.
After graduating from medical school, Dr. Winsor was inspired by chiropractic and osteopathic literature to experiment. He planned to dissect human and animal cadavers to see if there was a relationship between any diseased internal organ discovered on autopsy and the vertebrae associated with the nerves that went to the organ. As he wrote: "The object of these necropsies was to determine whether any connection existed between curvatures of the spine, and diseased organs; or whether the two were entirely independent of each other."
• University Permission
The University of Pennsylvania gave Dr. Winsor permission to carry out his experiments. In a series of three studies he dissected a total of seventy-five human and twenty-two cat cadavers . The following are Dr. Winsor's results: "221 structures other than the spine were found diseased. Of these, 212 were from the same sympathetic (nerve) segments as the vertebrae in curvature. Nine diseased organs belonged to different sympathetic segments from the vertebrae out of line. These figures cannot be expected to exactly coincide…for an organ may receive sympathetic filaments from several spinal segments and several organs may be supplied with sympathetic (nerve) filaments from the same spinal segments." In other words, there was nearly a 100% correlation between minor curvatures of the spine and diseases of the internal organs.
• In Conclusion
Dr. Winsor's results are published in The Medical Times (a medical journal published a century ago) and can be found in any medical library. Winsor was not alone in his findings. Similar studies by other researchers have confirmed Dr. Winsor's conclusion that misaligned and DEGENERATIVE spines (SUBLUXATED SPINES) have a high --- almost 100% ---- correlation with disease processes. Do you see why I use the Spinal Nerve charts in my office?

Interestingly enough, I just had a patient who came to me for low back pain, tell me after their third adjustment that their BOWELS WERE WORKING better than they had in years, and their CHRONIC DEPRESSION was lifting. My first real experience with this phenomenon happened shortly after starting practice 20 years ago. A woman drove down from Houston to see me for a case of full-blown hemi-paralysis (half her body, including her face, was totally paralyzed). She had been like this for over two years; and when I asked her why she came to see a brand new graduate when there were 3 chiros in her town, she told me that God had told her to come to me. I X-rayed the woman, determined the top bone in her spine (Atlas) was way out of alignment, adjusted her, and watched as she got off the table completely normal!
One of the most radical cases of this phenomenon was a 60 year old patient who got his hearing back after just one adjustment. He had been over 90% deaf for 42 years ---- since a car wreck that occurred when he was 18 years old. He had no neck pain, but had come to see me for his low back. I found subluxations in his neck, and when I adjusted him ---- walla ---- his hearing returned! The thing is, I cannot take one iota of credit. I did not even know that he was deaf ---- he was a lip reader (HERE)!
Dr. Schierling completed four years of Kansas State University's five-year Nutrition / Exercise Physiology Program before deciding on a career in Chiropractic. He graduated from Logan Chiropractic College in 1991, and has run a busy clinic in Mountain View, Missouri ever since. He and his wife Amy have four children (three daughters and a son).
