UNDERSTANDING THE GLUTEN, LEAKY
"Once people's Immune System begins making antibodies to Gluten; for reasons that are not yet clearly understood, these same Immune Systems often begin making antibodies to self. This is called Autoimmunity..... Autoimmune Diseases tend to travel in packs, like wolves. This is because your problem is not the disease itself, but the fact that your body is making antibodies to itself and will continue to make antibodies to itself until you dry up the source of Inflammation and fix the Leaky Gut." From the UNIVERSAL CURE section of my Blog.
The AMA hated Dr. Lee because of his stance on the relationship between nutrition and health (or lack thereof). As outlandish as it might seem today, until the 1980's, the official stance of the AMA was that as long as a person was getting enough calories and their RDA's for the various vitamins and minerals, nutrition could not be the major factor in one's health. In fact, at one of Lee's many legal proceedings, Dr Elmer Nelson, head of the FDA's Nutrition Division, said this in response to Lee's assertions. "It is wholly unscientific to state that a well-fed body is more able to resist disease than a less well-fed body." One of the things these various organizations specifically attacked Lee for was his work on GUT HEALTH and Leaky Gut Syndrome.
A foundational health principle you'll absolutely have to understand if you ever hope to make a dent in your CHRONIC AUTOIMMUNE DISEASE(S) (HERE is a short list of some of the more common Autoimmune Diseases) is something that is most widely known as LEAKY GUT SYNDROME (the medical research community refers to it as Increased Intestinal Permeability). Despite the fact that the biggest number of practicing physicians either don't know anything about it or completely deny it's existence, listen to what Dr. Lee wrote nearly 70 years ago.
So, how in the world does a "Leaky Gut" lead to allergies / sensitivities? Instead of me taking a lot of time to explain something I already went into detail about, I will let the venerable heart surgeon, Dr. Oz do it for me (HERE). Just understand that due to UNCONTROLLED INFLAMMATION, the "tight junctions" (small gaps) between individual cells in the Gut (intestines) become "loose", which allows the tight junctions to get looser. This lets increasingly large particles of undigested foods and proteins into the gut. Your body recognizes these as foreign and begins to mount an Immune System attack on them by creating antibodies. Here is where it begins to get crazy. Listen to what Royal Lee said 60 years ago about this phenomenon of Leaky Gut Syndrome and its effect on health (this is transcribed from a lecture given in the mid 1950's).
"Don't forget now, there are two kinds of antibodies. There are natural tissue antibodies and there are antibodies to foreign proteins. Most of our textbooks on immune reactions discuss nothing but the antibodies that are developed against foreign proteins. In this next period of scientific development of this physiological reaction, you're going to hear more about natural tissue antibodies. They've been discussed and described but you won't find them in the textbooks yet."
The thing that the FDA, AMA, and other organizations despised him for above all else (they literally hounded him to an early grave with the constant law suits and legal battles), was his work on the relationship between Autoimmunity and malnutrition / nutritional deficiencies. You see, Dr. Lee discovered something all these decades ago that we still don't really understand today. He discovered that there was a part of the nuclear matter of certain kinds of cells that would work against Autoimmunity (slow it down or sometimes even stop it) without grossly suppressing the Immune System like immunosuppresive drugs such as Corticosteroids do. Take a look at this video describing the general way the Anti-Autoimmunity factors that Lee incorporated into dozens of his nutritional formulas work. He called these Anti-Autoimmunity factors Protomorphagens, or PMG's for short
Secondly; although Whole Food Nutritionists have been successfully using Dr. Lee's work / products for decades to help people suffering with all sorts of Autoimmune Diseases, the science is beginning to catch up with his mind. One break-through occurred a couple of years ago, when blood tests were finally developed for a number of the more common Autoimmune Diseases. Enter Cyrex Labs. Founded by one of the world's premiere Immunologists (Dr. Aristo Vodjani, MD), Cyrex is not only the world's top lab for testing for GLUTEN SENSITIVITY / GLUTEN CROSS-REACTIVITY, they are also testing for things like Increased Intestinal Permeability (Leaky Gut Syndrome), and is, as far as I am aware, the only lab I'm aware of that is testing the blood for specific Autoimmune Antibodies. Although the ANA blood test (Anti-Nuclear Antibodies) has been around for a long time, all it does is tell you if you have Autoimmunity in your system. The Cyrex test goes much farther and tells you which specific tissue(s) / enzyme(s) / protein(s) your Immune System is making antibodies to. And they are regularly adding to THIS LIST (Array 5 is the Autoimmune Antibody list). Let's look at one example of an Autoimmune Disease where Lee's knowledge (he had largely figured this thing out back in the 1940's) and Vodjani's incredible grasp on immunology can be seen working symbiotically.
NEW INFORMATION ABOUT MULTIPLE SCLEROSIS
THE MORE THINGS CHANGE, THE MORE THEY STAY THE SAME
"Biologists have demonstrated a connection between multiple sclerosis -- an autoimmune disorder that affects the brain and spinal cord -- and gut bacteria." - The July 20, 2010 issue of Science Daily, talking about the research of Drs. Sarkis K. Mazmanian and Yun Kyung Lee of the California Institute of Technology
Multiple Sclerosis is an Autoimmune Disease that is the result of scarring (sclerosis) along the surface of the Brain and Central Nervous System which is the result of the body perceiving it's own meylin sheaths (the insulation around the nerve system --- the so called 'white matter') as foreign. Once the body recognizes a tissue as foreign, it makes antibodies against it and begins the attack. As you might imagine, the resulting symptoms can be far-ranging and include physical, cognitive, and even psychiatric problems. As is the case with virtually all Autoimmune Diseases, women are far more affected than men, and depending on when the disease first appears, it can shorten life span by as much as a decade.
I'm writing this post because four years after the Cal Tech study showing a strong link between the disease and Gut Bacteria, another major study is taking it a step further. Back in October, the medical journal PLoS ONE published a collaboration between Weill Cornell Medical College and The Rockefeller University in New York. Their conclusion is that the common bacteria (Clostridium perfringens - type B) produces a toxin which triggers MS. And although they were talking about animals in this case, listen to what the researchers wrote about what they think might trigger C Perfringens to trigger MS. "Neurologic symptoms occur when carbohydrate rich feed... favors exponential growth of the bacilli ".
The Clostridium family of bacteria are inclined to manufacture toxins. The most common is one that you have likely heard of --- Clostridum Botulinum (Boltulism) ---- the bacteria that BOTOX is made from. A 2012 study from the journal Veterinary Microbiology talked about the benefit of Proteolytic Enzymes (DIGESTIVE ENZYMES that break down protein --- particularly the pancreatic enzyme Trypsin) in helping get rid of C. Perfringens infections. No matter how you slice it, the cliche from the old school natural doctors is just as true today as it ever was. Heal the gut, heal the body. But how does one go about healing the gut?
IS IT POSSIBLE TO HELP THOSE FIGHTING MULTIPLE
SCLEROSIS TO DO IT IN A MORE NATURAL MANNER?
In order to start this process, it means you'll have to take some serious responsibility for your health. For one thing, you are going to have to study. Knowledge is power, and you can start by gaining a cursory understanding of things like TBI'S, INFLAMMATION (not one in a thousand people have any idea what it really is), GLUTEN SENSITIVITY, LEAKY GUT SYNDROME, BLOOD SUGAR (remember the quote about carbohydrate rich feeds from above?), ANTIBIOTICS, PROBIOTICS, DYSBIOSIS, and GUT HEALTH. And that's just for starters. You'll also need to figure out which DIET will be the best for your particular situation.
I have put together some very generalized information HERE and HERE that may help you understand the process that will be needed to get the bull by the horns and start taking charge of your own health. If you have further questions you can contact me or make an appointment with someone in your area --- preferably someone who practices FUNCTIONAL NEUROLOGY and Functional Medicine.
Rheumatological manifestations in inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) are frequent and include peripheral arthritis, axial involvement and peripheral enthesitis [Tendinosis], osteoporosis and hypertrophic osteoarthropathy, and ankylosing spondylitis. Cherry picked from the Abstract of a study called, "Rheumatological Manifestations in Inflammatory Bowel Disease"; an article found in the June 2011 issue of Annals of Gastroenterology.
I would argue that there is no such thing as a localized autoimmune disease. Certainly various tissues, glands or organs may be affected in one person more than another. However, autoimmune conditions are more systemic than they are localized. Certainly if gut dysbiosis can cause inflammatory cascades in tissues all over the body, the effects of autoimmune signaling are indeed systemic.... Refined and processed foods, rampant antibiotic usage, chemical and metal toxicity all derail the health of the intestinal micro-flora. Studies have demonstrated that the gut flora plays a critical role in regulating inflammatory cascades, including the factors which incite tissue inflammation..... The gastrointestinal tract is a large surface area containing trillions of microbes that make up a large percentage of the immune defenses. Dysfunction to the intestinal mucosal barrier leads to a condition commonly referred to as leaky gut syndrome. Closer inspection often reveals a condition called villous atrophy. When this takes place there tends to be a very high level of inflammation that is present. There is now an increasing body of evidence that shows that gut dysfunction is a primary factor in autoimmune diseases such as RA, lupus, MS and AS. There are many studies which cite the association between intestinal dysbiosis and the development of autoimmune conditions. Studies such as this one, demonstrates that in the autoimmune condition ankylosing spondylitis, 70% of patients had gut inflammation. Cherry picked from Michael McEvoy's article, The Role of Gut Function In Autoimmune Conditions
"In hospitals, 190 million doses of antibiotics are administered each day. Among non-hospitalized patients, more than 133 million courses of antibiotics are prescribed by doctors each year. It is estimated that 50 percent of these latter prescriptions are unnecessary since they are being prescribed for colds, coughs and other viral infections". Interesting quote. I took it directly from the website of the American College of Physicians (Internal Medicine). I've seen estimates much higher than the 50% they mention.
Another prominent medical website, world-famous Mayo Clinic, lists health problems which they state,"are almost always" viral in nature ---- but are commonly treated with antibiotics. Which health problems facing you and your family are almost always viral? Mayo's list includes.......
- MOST EAR INFECTIONS
- Influenza (FLU)
- Sore Throats
- Bronchitis (CHRONIC CONGESTION)
- Upper Respiratory Infections (SINUS INFECTIONS)
- Stomach Flu (This is not the same as the "Flu" although it is what we call the Flu. The truth is, most of us have probably never had the Flu. The real name of the Stomach Flu is "Gastroenteritis".)
Miriam Rabkin (M.D. M.P.H.), wrote in the Medical House Staff Training Program in Internal Medicine for the Department of Medicine at the Ivy League's Columbia University Medical Center: “It is clear that there is no role for antibiotics in the management of simple upper respiratory infection [URI] and bronchitis. This statement is data-based, uncontroversial, and supported by every expert panel and management guideline. Why then do physicians continue to prescribe antibiotics – of wider and wider spectrum – for these syndromes? The scope of the problem is immense. A large 1997 survey indicated that antibiotics were prescribed for 52 percent of patients with URIs and 66 percent of patients with bronchitis. This practice did not vary by geographical area, physician specialty or patient socio-demographic or insurance status. These data are consistent with other U.S. surveys and with data collected in other industrialized countries. Antibiotics unnecessarily prescribed for URIs and bronchitis represent 31 percent of total antibiotic prescriptions in the U.S.” Her statement is backed by dozens upon dozens of scientific studies from around the world.
I do not have the time required to tackle all of the questions raised by Dr. Rabkin's quote. However, I want to show you just how bad antibiotics are when it comes to your overall health and immune system function. This is because contrary to popular belief, antibiotics are not an immune system booster. They are an immune system suppressor. Here are the definitions of what it means to suppress: To end or stop, end, or put down something by force. To keep something secret or hidden: to not allow people to know about or see something or to keep from public knowledge. To exclude from consciousness. To inhibit the growth or development of something. I would say that these fairly well describe the twisted relationship between antibiotics and your immune system --- whether you realize it or not.
Gut Health & Antibiotics
A decade and a half has passed since a group of Australian doctors from the University of Melbourne's Department of Anatomy and Cell Biology published a scientific paper in The American Journal of Physiology called, "The Intestine as a Sensory Organ: Neural, Endocrine, and Immune Responses". The authors told us something that alternative health field already knew, and the Scientific-Medical Community had suspected for decades. "The gut immune system has 70 – 80% of the body's immune cells". Stop! Did you catch that? Read it again and let it sink in. Your gut (intestines and digestive tract) is where the vast majority of your entire immune system lives! Why have I been telling people for over two decades that Antibiotics are one of the single biggest destroyers of health in this country? Plainly stated, they kill immune system cells. Antibiotics always leave you with a WEAKENED GUT and immune system. And when you get sick again, what are you given? More antibiotics. Repeat ad infinitum. As you see, antibiotics and infection can quickly become a vicious cycle. But this is just the beginning.
This vicious cycle of antibiotics and infection opens a Pandora's Box of health problems with the potential to affect virtually every part of the body. This cycle has been strongly linked to LEAKY GUT SYNDROME, GLUTEN SENSITIVITY and Dysbiosis. DYSBIOSIS (too many bad organisms in the gut crowding out the good) is now being touted in the peer-reviewed scientific literature as a primary culprit in AUTOIMMUNITY (at least 20-30% of the American population has some sort of AUTOIMMUNE DISEASE, with some researchers are putting that number closer to half).
These include things like Type I Diabetes, HASHIMOTO'S THYROIDITIS (low thyroid function --- affects nearly 10% of the American population), RHEUMATOID ARTHRITIS, Restless Leg Syndrome, PERIPHERAL NEUROPATHY, as well as all sorts of HORMONAL PROBLEMS. Dysbiosis is also a prime suspect in FIBROMYALGIA, MIGRAINE HEADACHES, DEPRESSION, and OBESITY as well. On top of this, low grade, "occult" (hidden) viral and / or bacterial infections are being touted as a potential cause of all sorts of CHRONIC PAIN SYNDROMES, NEUROLOGICAL PROBLEMS, and INFLAMMATORY DISEASE PROCESSES --- including DIABETES and CANCER!
The only way you are ever going to have a prayer of solving some of these problems is to step outside the box that is conventional medicine. Your problem may be purely mechanical (HERE is an example). Or, it could have all sorts of crazy components that require some intensive testing ---- but not the same testing you have already been through. Figure out what your underlying problem are (HERE) and deal with them. Click on the link for several articles that contain a variety of strategies.
TRAUMATIC BRAIN INJURES & TBI-INDUCED AUTOIMMUNITY
MORE COMMON THAN EVER IMAGINED
According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, at least 1.4 million people sustain a traumatic brain injury each year in the United States. Of these, about 50,000 die, 235,000 are hospitalized, and 1.1 million are treated and released from an emergency room department.... head trauma may induce an autoimmune inflammatory disorder.... Damaged brain tissue leaks through the blood-brain barrier into the general circulation and becomes, in fact, an antigen just like a virus or allergen. Antibodies are formed against brain tissue that may become "auto" and start to attack various tissues including the brain itself. Regardless, an autoimmune inflammatory disorder may develop after head trauma and not only cause joint and muscle pain but attack other organs such as the eye, lung, heart, liver, intestine, and kidney—just like any autoimmune inflammatory condition. Dr. Forest Tennant, from the May 2013 issue of Practical Pain Management --- a journal specifically for "Pain Doctors". Dr. Tennant is the editor of PPM.
The problem with TBI (Traumatic Brain Injury), however, is not simply the "Post-Concussion" headache. The problem is that Traumatic Brain Injuries are being linked to a host of health problems that are seemingly unrelated to the head injury itself. In fact, this is almost surely the reason that the famous whiplash research team of Gargan & Bannister declared over two decades ago that whiplash-like injuries frequently result in a host of, "bizarre and seemingly unrelated symptoms".
The specific symptoms of TBI mentioned in Dr. Tennant's article include (links are mine), "memory loss and confusion; mood swings; reading, speaking, or reasoning problems; problems understanding what is being said, learning new things, or dealing with old familiar things like time, numbers, or money; difficulty sleeping; abnormally low body temperature; weight gain; confusion; explosive behavior; severe fatigue; loss of interest in hobbies, friends, and sex; difficulty organizing and prioritizing or sequencing events, multitasking, watching movies or sports; coping with noisy or brightly lit places; eroding social skills; failure for children to develop' THYROID, pituitary, adrenal [FIBROMYALGIA] or other hormonal problems". But that's not all folks --- the hits keep coming. Some of the others listed in the article include
- INABILITY TO LEARN OR CONCENTRATE (Mental Fog)
- INCREASED RISK OF HEART ATTACKS AND / OR STROKES
- LOSS OF MUSCLE MASS / WEAKNESS (This is most likely a function of injury-induced LOW TESTOSTERONE)
- LOSS OF LIBIDO --- MALE OR FEMALE
As you can see, thinking about concussions / head injuries in simple terms of headaches is extremely short-sighted. This is why those of you struggling with Chronic Pain that your doctors cannot seem to find a reason for might want to take the time to read DR. TENNANT'S ARTICLE. It will take you less than five minutes, and could be the thing that starts you on the pathway back to health.
I will share a couple of tidbits with you concerning this article / editorial. It is my experience that people who are AUTOIMMUNE have an almost 100% chance of being GLUTEN SENSITIVE, which, in and of itself leads to numerous other NEUROLOGICAL PROBLEMS. And if you are sensitive to Gluten, you are probably sensitive to other things as well (HERE). Fail to address these issues, and you cannot possibly hope to find a "cure".
INFLAMMATION will continue to run rampant in your body. And in similar fashion to the "LEAKY BRAIN SYNDROME" discussed in Dr. Tennant's article, you will undoubtedly develop LEAKY GUT SYNDROME as well. But there is hope. Between various forms of BRAIN-BASED THERAPY, SCAR TISSUE REMODELING, CHIROPRACTIC ADJUSTMENTS, COLD LASER THERAPY, as well as proper DIET / NUTRITIONAL SUPPORT, people with these sorts of problems can often be helped --- many times significantly (HERE). It is truly unfortunate that no one shared this information with ELVIS PRESLEY after his head injury.
NEW CAUSES AND POTENTIAL "CURES"
FOR AUTOIMMUNITY, INCLUDING RA?
NOT NEW. MORE OF THE SAME OLD STUFF I'VE BEEN SHOWING YOU FOR YEARS
The inflamed joints and systemic inflammation characteristic of early rheumatoid arthritis (RA) have been linked with an altered pattern of gut microbial colonization, suggesting a new explanation for autoimmunity and having potential implications for treatment.... 75% of patients with new-onset, untreated RA had a distinct predominance of intestinal microbiota, with an expansion of pro-inflammatory Prevotella copri. As reported by Nancy Walsh in yesterday's edition of MedPage Today --- research led by Dr Dan Littman (MD / Ph.D) of New York University
WARNING WARNING WARNING DO NOT TRY THIS AT HOME!
Once a person get severe enough and their health degrades below a certain point, diet changes (HERE), taking HSO PROBIOTICS, and other interventions might not be enough to solve these problems. Not that I would ever suggest you try this without a doctor's supervision, but in Europe, they are effectively treating Autoimmunity via STOOL TRANSPLANTS. Yeah; you heard me correctly the first time. In Europe, they are solving all kinds of cases of AUTOIMMUNITY by flushing out the bowel via enemas or colonic irrigation procedures, and then reintroducing good bacteria via a healthy "stool" donor. The process is really not all that complicated (roughly speaking, 2 oz of donor feces are collected, liquified, and then 'injected' back up into the colon of the ill individual) .
If this post is speaking to you, go to MedPage Today and read the entire article. Better yet, if you really want to get educated about the way(s) that all of this works together for health or illness, start clicking the above links. I have many articles similar to this one.
LATEST NEWS ON TESTING FOR
IRRITABLE BOWEL SYNDROME
"Mark Pimentel and his colleagues have been exploring the pathophysiology of IBS, and have found that in many cases, the condition arises after an episode of gastroenteritis, with bacterial overgrowth in the small intestine resulting from neuromuscular damage..... Increased levels of proinflammatory cytokines have been found in the colonic mucosa of patients with IBS, especially those patients with post-infectious IBS" From two different MedPage Today articles that were published earlier this week
I bring up the subject of diagnostic testing because doctors have recently come up with a test for IBS (Irritable Bowel Syndrome). IBS is a group of poorly defined bowel symptoms that consist chiefly of gas as well as pain and bloating in the abdominal (tummy) area. IBS is also almost always associated with changes in stool consistency (diarrhea and CONSTIPATION) and something called SIBO. However, there are a wide variety of other symptoms that are frequently associated with IBS as well (DEPRESSION is one of the biggies). Others include.....
- Heartburn (ACID REFLUX)
- Urgency (the need to find a bathroom NOW)
- The Feeling that the Bowel is Never Really Empty; Even After Voiding
- General Fatigue & Generalized Muscle and Joint Pain (HERE)
- Sleep Disorders / Insomnia (HERE)
- Low Back Pain (HERE)
Up until recently, there has been no diagnostic test for IBS. However, a recent breakthrough may allow Irritable Bowel Syndrome to be diagnosed via simple a simple blood test. Viniculin is a protein that plays a part in things like cellular cohesion, cellular movement, nerve cell migration, and MECHANORECEPTION. It also happens to play a part in things like FASCIAL ADHESIONS.
A new test developed by doctors at UCLA's Cedars-Siani Hospital in Los Angeles, California, is showing a diagnostic accuracy of almost 95% for detecting the presence of IBS. The test looks for high levels of anti-viniculin antibodies. What does this tell us? Something that those in the know had been speculating about for a very long time. IBS is an Autoimmune Disease --- a disease in which your body mounts immune system responses against its own tissues, makes antibodies against them, then attacks them.
What have I been telling people for a number of years? If you want to have any hope of dealing with AUTOIMMUNITY, you had better dramatically change your diet. I highly recommend the PALEO DIET because it completely cuts out the most POTENTIALLY REACTIVE FOODS (DO NOT FAIL TO UNDERSTAND FODMAPS!) I have also been telling anyone who will listen that virtually all health problems are driven by INFLAMMATION. Inflammation leads to LEAKY GUT SYNDROME (or visa versa), which in turn provides the foundation for ill health. Take this to the bank; you cannot have IBS without having a Leaky Gut. It is my experience that you cannot have IBS without having major food sensitivities as well ---- chiefly to GLUTEN and dairy (HERE is a list of Autoimmune Diseases associated with Gluten). Also, when it comes to IBS, FODMAPS are a factor in 75% of that population.
For those who are interested, a study so new it has not yet been published (it was presented by Dr. Orla Craig of Ireland's University College Cork in Ireland, at the recent American College of Gastroenterology meeting), is associating high levels of Interluekin-6 (IL-6) with both IBS and mood disorders such as DEPRESSION. IL-6 is one of the major markers used to detect INFLAMMATION. Not surprising considering we have seen Depression heavily tied to both ANTIBIOTIC USE and POOR GUT HEALTH.
As you should be starting to notice, it is looking more and more like much of our nation's sickness and disease is just one big thing (HERE). The problem is that instead of using this information to really help patients fix their Guts and CURE THESE VARIOUS DISEASES, they are using it to develop and promote ---- you guessed it ---- drugs. Not surprisingly, since IBS is an Autoimmune Disease, the drugs of choice are immuno-suppresive (drugs that suppress the Immune System).
A recent study done at the University of California in San Francisco probed the question of which anti-TNF-α drug (Tumor Necorosis Factor Alpha is a Cytokine, yet another marker of INFLAMMATION) is better for Colitis; Remicade or Humira. Be aware that the differences between these two drugs was slight, with both having about the same number of side effects. Both of these drugs are also used to treat other Autoimmune Diseases as well (Rheumatoid Arthritis, Psoriatic Arthritis, Ankylosing Spondylitis, Crohn’s Disease, Ulcerative Colitis, Plaque Psoriasis, Juvenile Idiopathic Arthritis, and many others).
The problem with these two drugs is, as is always the case, the side effects. Without going into all the specific side effects which you can do online yourself, you can begin to grasp how big a deal these drugs are because they are both ---- as stated earlier ----- Immuno-Suppressive. This means that they work by SUPPRESSING ONE'S IMMUNE SYSTEM. As crazy as it may sound, the inflammatory marker TNF-α (Tumor Necrosis Factor Alpha) is actually a critical part of one's Immune System. Suppress the Immune System and you might relieve some symptoms, but you can also open Pandora's Box. Could be why several types of cancers are dramatically higher (as much as 300% higher) on these drugs.
Oh; there is one more thing that should be noted about this study. It was funded by Janssen Biotech of Canada (the company that just happens to market Remicade here in America) and a company called Salix Pharmaceuticals, Inc. Salix, a North Carolina corporation that specializes in drugs and devices for Gastrointestinal Disorders, is listed as the American Corporation with the highest revenue (nearly $1,500,000) per employee. It's not a leap to imagine that if you followed the money on this little endeavor, you would find an incestuous relationship between Salix and Jenssen. In America, the cost of Remicade, which must be delivered via infusion, is between two and three thousand dollars per week, with Humira being somewhat less (Enbrel is another popular drug in this same class).
When inflammation is either not explained to patients, or "mysticized" as an unknowable phenomenon that can only be dealt with via a lifetime of drugs; that is exactly what is promoted ---- drugs. And eventually surgeries. Instead of blindly following your doctor's advice, don't you think it might be time to make some serious changes to your lifestyle? Not one person in 100 (maybe one in 1,000) has any real idea what Inflammation really is. Start changing you life by educating yourself and taking some action steps. No; I totally agree with you ---- it's not easy. But the alternative (staying on your same course of doing nothing and taking their drugs) is not likely doing you any favors over the long haul either. Use THIS INFORMATION as a starting point.
MEDICAL SURVEY ON GLUTEN SENSITIVITY
Over five thousand medical professionals responded. Out of over 5,000 readers who responded by answering yes or no, the final totals were 54% for fad, 46% for not a fad. I read many of the survey's comments. Interestingly enough, it seemed to me that a fairly vast majority of the commenters (only about 1 in 100 who took the survey actually commented), were on the side of non-celiac Gluten Sensitivity being real as opposed to being a fad. In fact, AUTOIMMUNITY was directly mentioned by many commenters as being directly related to Gluten. Furthermore, some of the specific diseases listed included IRRITABLE BOWEL SYNDROME, CROHN'S DISEASE, Lupus, HYPOTHYROIDISM, MULTIPLE SCLEROSIS, LEAKY GUT SYNDROME / INCREASED INTESTINAL PERMEABILITY, RHEUMATOID ARTHRITIS, and many others.
Unfortunately, the results of this survey shows us that a large percentage of the medical population still sees Gluten Sensitivity as a fad (the same as a myth). This means that if you actually get tested for Celiac Disease --- and test negative ---- in their minds, Gluten cannot be the culprit. Millions of Americans know otherwise. The truth is, Gluten is being associated in the peer-reviewed literature with almost every health problem you can imagine --- particularly NEUROLOGICAL PROBLEMS. If you are chronically ill and / or suffering from any number of CHRONIC INFLAMMATORY DEGENERATIVE DISEASES, you seriously need to take a few minutes and look at the links on THIS PAGE.
AUTOIMMUNITY, HEAD INJURIES, AND THE RELATIONSHIP TO ELVIS PRESLEY'S DEATH
At the time, the public issue and controversy was centering on Elvis' drug use, and whether he died of a heart attack or drug overdose. There was little interest in his underlying medical problems, pain, or why he died at the relatively young age of 42.
Progress in modern pain management finally has provided us with enough scientific knowledge about traumatic brain injury (TBI), autoimmune disease, and pain to unravel his medical history. After piecing the evidence together, it is quite clear to me that Elvis' major disabling medical problems stemmed from multiple head injuries that led to an autoimmune inflammatory disorder with subsequent central pain.
Much to his credit, Dr. Nick gave Elvis the diagnosis of post-concussion syndrome, and believed his headaches were a result of his head injury of 1967. Dr. Nick related to me that, "Elvis was never the same after he hit his head in 1967." Cherry-picked quotes from Dr. Tennant's article below.
If you have had major concussions, head injuries (TBI), or WHIPLASH INJURIES; or if you have CHRONIC PAIN or a history of AUTOIMMUNITY (HERE is a short list of Autoimmune Diseases); or if you are simply intrigued by Elvis' early death, I would strongly suggest that you take a few minutes and read this incredibly fascinating and informative article about the death of the "King of Rock-n-Roll".
CHRONIC PAIN, AUTOIMMUNITY, AND CHRONIC DISEASE:
When it comes to Chronic Pain and Chronic Sickness & Disease, anything can cause anything. Dr. Russell Schierling
I went through my series of examinations and checks and began to work on him. The treatment was making some slight changes in his pain and ability to walk, but nothing to write home about. His SCIATIC PAIN ended in his lateral calf (the L5 dermatome), leading me to believe his problem could very well be related to his lowest spinal vertebrae. However, I could not elicit pain at his L5 (low back) no matter what I did, nor could I find any adhesions in his THORACO LUMBAR FASCIA. What did I find? This man had FASCIAL ADHESIONS in his lateral calf, which, when dealt with, relieved his pain almost immediately and almost 100% (HERE). This allowed him to stand upright and walk without a limp for the first time in several years. I would not have suspected this finding in a million years, but it just goes to show that anything can cause anything.
One of the reasons that the underlying cause of so many Chronic Pain Syndromes are missed is not simply because most doctors do not really grasp the importance of the FASCIAL SYSTEM (HERE and HERE as well), but because few are really willing to think outside the box. I am not picking here --- it's simply the truth. Unfortunately, it's not true only of problems having to do with the musculoskeletal system. While this will not in any way be a new concept to those who are in the field of Natural Healing or FUNCTIONAL MEDICINE, let me give you an example of a mainstream medical journal that is stepping outside of the box, and showing that anything can cause anything in the realm of health, sickness, and disease.
When it comes to AUTOIMMUNITY, America takes the cake. Official government stats tell us that over 20% of our entire population has some sort of Autoimmune Disease (see the first paragraph for a list that can in no ways be considered "comprehensive"). And as crazy as it sounds, many experts feel that this number is actually closer to 50%. No matter how you slice it, Autoimmunity is an American epidemic! What are patients usually told about their Autoimmunity? They come home from their doctor believing they have a problem with their THYROID, BLADDER, TENDONS, FASCIA, a wide variety of BRAIN OR CNS-BASED PROBLEMS, (insert your body part of choice here _____________), etc, etc, etc.
This is a very misleading and incorrect way of looking at Autoimmunity. The problem is not with the body part or organ system that is being attacked by your own Immune System, it's with the Immune System itself. Because this simple fact is either not grasped (or blatantly ignored) by the majority of the medical profession, you will frequently see people suffering with (as well as being treated for) numerous Autoimmune Diseases simultaneously. If you follow along, you'll see why I have always said that Autoimmune Diseases tend to travel like wolves ----- in packs.
Although the peer-reviewed scientific medical literature is absolutely full of studies that show all of this to be true, the mainstream medical community has been slow to catch on to their own profession's research. Fortunately, this is starting to change. Enter a recent article (Integrative Treatment Approaches for Juvenile Idiopathic Arthritis) by Dr. Leslie Mendoza Temple of the University of Chicago, as published in the latest issue of Practical Pain Management --- a journal for medical doctors who run "Pain Clinics".
For the most part, these Pain Doctors are doctors who have little interest in finding solutions to patient's underlying problem. This is not because they are heartless, it's simply that they believe that this is an impossible task --- that these patients are so messed up that nothing will help them short of drastic and harsh interventions; interventions that include SHOTS, PAIN MEDS, and procedures (RFA's, CT GUIDED INJECTIONS, IMPLANTED ELECTRICAL OR CHEMICAL DEVICES, etc, etc) to control and cover pain. I must, however, give PPM credit for at least discussing things like the ANTI-INFLAMMATORY DIET as well as other non-invasive conservative treatments. But when the recent issue carried an article on the relationship between Autoimmunity and Leaky Gut Syndrome, I about fell out of my chair. Listen to what Dr. Leslie Mendoza Temple wrote concerning LEAKY GUT SYNDROME and its relationship to Autoimmunity (by the way, JIA -- Juvenile Idopathic Arthritis used to be called JRA --- JUVENILE RHEUMATOID ARTHRITIS).
Increased Intestinal Permeability [one of the many medical terms for Leaky Gut Syndrome] has been implicated in several autoimmune and inflammatory conditions like rheumatoid arthritis, ankylosing spondylitis, multiple sclerosis, celiac disease, type I diabetes, asthma, and inflammatory bowel disease. Mielants et al studied ileum [small intestine] biopsies of JIA patients and found a majority with histologic gut inflammation [it can be seen at the cellular level]. Bacteria, antigenic fragments, and primed immune system cells may migrate to joints from distant sites that originated in the 'leaky gut', subsequently promoting synovitis [inflamed joints]. Based on ongoing research, intestinal permeability and its role in autoimmune disease, there is the potential in mitigating diseases like JIA with therapies that can reduce gut permeability.
In her treatment "algorithm" (flowchart), she only wants children treated this way if they do not respond to conventional therapy ("Pharmaceuticals, Sleep, Counseling, and Exercise"). What possible reason could she logically give for not using the natural methods described above (i.e. the methods that actually deal with root causes of autoimmunity) first, instead of playing "Second Fiddle" to drugs? Don't be fooled. These drugs are harsh! A sister article in the same issue of PPM (Advances in Pharmacological Pain Management of Juvenile Idiopathic Arthritis --- JRA) and written by the same author, talked about the supposed benefits of a wide range of NSAIDS & ASPIRIN and CORTICOSTEROIDS, IMMUNE SYSTEM SUPPRESSORS, DMARD's therapy, Anti-Tumor Necrosis Factor Drugs, chemotherapy drugs such as Methotrexate, as well as a host of others. Trust me when I tell you that the side effects of these drugs are potentially serious to the point of being DEADLY.
The truth is, if you want any hope of healing your Immune System ---- not just covering your symptoms for awhile, but actually dealing with (and defeating) some of the underlying causes of Autoimmunity ---- you will have to step outside the box your doctor has stuck you in. Not only does Dr. Temple do a good job of telling you how to go about doing this, I have written several dozen articles on this topic as well. In fact, I sometimes feel like a broken record.
You could start by reading about and understanding INFLAMMATION. HERE is one such article that puts some of it together for you, giving you at least an idea of where to go from there. And thank you Dr. Tennant for including articles like the one by Dr. Temple above in your journal (thank you also Dr. Temple for this wonderful article!). If the medical profession would take notice of this information and provide a concerted effort get patients to follow the advice given in articles like this one or the one by the venerable Dr. David Seaman, we could make some real headway against this scourge of Autoimmunity here in America.
She [the doctor] said they don't know what causes it, and they don't have a cure for it. They just try to control the symptoms with medication. I left that day with a prescription for a drug that MIGHT help my symptoms, but also causes liver damage, digestive tract damage and makes your hair fall out. Needless to say, I didn't want to take the medicine. I thought to myself I have not tried nearly enough things to think that taking this medicine was a good idea."
The following is an email testimonial from one of my dear friends who was diagnosed with an Autoimmune Disease six months ago. Bear in mind that the list of Autoimmune Diseases is not only ridiculously long, but it has been estimated that somewhere between 20% and 50% of the entire American population has one or more of them (HERE). Also be aware that the only way to have a hope of solving these sorts of problems is to step outside the "Medical Box". It's always cool to see proof of what happens when people have the courage take that step. Thanks for the email Kate. We love you guys!
She said they don't know what causes it, and they don't have a cure for it. They just try to control the symptoms with medication. I left that day with a prescription for a drug that MIGHT help my symptoms, but also causes liver damage, digestive tract damage and makes your hair fall out. Needless to say, I didn't want to take the medicine. I thought to myself I have not tried nearly enough things to think that taking this medicine was a good idea.
I contacted Dr. Schierling, a long time friend, for advice. He immediately told me to get off GLUTEN (by way of THIS POST). The urologist had previously suggested a diet with NO caffeine, artificial colors, sweeteners, flavors and eliminate high acid foods. (Which I did) Dr. Schierling also suggested doing blood work to check gluten sensitivity, gluten cross-contaminates sensitivity GLUTEN CROSS-CONTAMINATES SENSITIVITY and for "LEAKY GUT SYNDROME". When the blood work came back it showed I was sensitive to corn and had "Leaky Gut Syndrome." Dr. Schierling did a lot of research for me and prescribed several different supplements to help heal the leaky gut in the hopes of combating the immune response attacking my body. By following the changes my diet that Dr. Schierling recommended (radical changes), I have improved my bladder symptoms / pain by about 90%. I went from being in pain all the time and being afraid I wasn't going to be able to live my life away from a bathroom to feeling fine most of the time and having minor discomfort from time to time.
The urologist's advice left me feeling hopeless because it wasn't addressing the underlying autoimmune issues. Dr. Schierling's advice not only helped naturally control the symptoms I was feeling, but over time I am hopeful will heal the underlying "Leaky Gut" and bladder disease. He also warned that autoimmune diseases tend to travel in "packs". If you have one you are very likely to get others as well. I REALLY don't want to have any others so I am highly motivated to stick with the diet changes in the hopes of having a healthy future. One happy side-effect is in the last 6 months I have lost close to 30 pounds. My HUSBAND has joined me in this diet change journey and has also lost a substantial amount of weight. More importantly, he FEELS better and is more energized.
UPDATE: As of 2015 there has been a 100% resolution of Kate's symptoms

IS YOUR TENDINOSIS SYSTEMIC OR LOCAL?
UNDERSTANDING THE DIFFERENCE IS CRITICAL!
Dear Dr. Schierling,
My name is XXX XXXXXX and I'm from Nevada. I found your website on tendinosis and want to know who in my area treats like you do? I am struggling with severe tendinitis (tendinosis) in my shoulders, elbows, wrists, hips, knees, and ankles. This problem is ruining my life. Who could you recommend in my area that does Tissue Remodeling?
Please help me. I am desperate.
Yeah; we help tons of people with local Tendinosis with a very minimal amount of treatment and expense (see HERE, or HERE). But trying to break down tendinous adhesions that are the result of a systemic problem will simply result in more pain and dysfunction. The key to solving Systemic Tendinosis is to figure out what is the underlying cause of the INFLAMMATION that is driving the problem. I get it; Tendinosis is not an "Inflammatory" problem. But if you have Systemic Inflammation coursing through your system, you are much more likely to have a wide variety of health problems, including bilateral, multiple-site Tendinosis.
Some of the things that I recommend for dealing with Systemic Tendinosis (as well as most SYSTEMIC HEALTH PROBLEMS) are simple, common-sense sorts of interventions that will be the foundation for just about any customized treatment protocol. Here is a short list.
- Do a Gluten Free Elimination Diet: The GLUTEN-FREE ELIMINATION DIET is a big deal because GLUTEN and GLUTEN CROSS REACTORS are a huge driver of Systemic, Inflammatory, and Autoimmune processes. There is a reason that you are hearing about Gluten every time you turn on the TV or open a magazine.
- Control your Blood Sugar and Eliminate Potentially Reactive Foods in the Process: One of the biggest reasons that I promote a PALEO DIET for most of my patients has to do with the fact that the diet is extremely non-reactive. The great side effect of this way of eating is that it will totally control your blood sugar levels in the process. UNCONTROLLED BLOOD SUGAR --- even in individuals who have 'normal' blood sugar readings (HERE) ---- is a leading cause of sickness and disease here in America.
- Drink Water and only Water: This goes without saying. I don't mind someone having some green tea, but if you are drinking SODA or other SUGARED drinks and trying to overcome Systemic Tendinosis, you are probably fighting a losing battle. And on top of this, the average American is dehydrated to at least some degree.
- Fix your Gut: GUT HEALTH is a critical part of healing any chronic problem. There is an old axiom in natural medicine that says, "Heal the Gut; Heal the Body". On many different levels and for many different problems, this statement is 100% accurate.
- Cold Laser Therapy: I have a lot of different modalities (ultrasound, Russian stim, electrical stimulators, TENS, etc, etc) that sit in the basement of my office gathering dust. The one and only modality I regularly use these days (for the past several years) is COLD LASER THERAPY.
- Take the Proper Supplements: Although there are several supplements that could go here, I will mention a couple; LIGAPLEX. Ligaplex by Standard Process has been around for a very long time, and actually provides people with the raw materials to heal and regenerate injured Connective Tissues. Despite tendinosis itself not being considered to be "Inflammatory, the body is often in an inflammatory state. Take PFGO. Bear in mind that in the case of Autoimmune-driven Tendinosis, there might be several nutritional supplements to take.
There are certainly other things that could be put on the list, but this will provide people with a starting point. If you have questions or concerns, be sure to read THIS POST.
DR OZ ON LEAKY GUT SYNDROME
(THE SOLUTION TO AUTOIMMUNITY?)
As the disease progressed, the boy went from taking anti-inflammatory medications to control his RA symptoms, to taking the popular chemotherapy drug commonly prescribed for RA (HERE), Methotrexate. As the child's health continued to deteriorate, the child's mother sought out alternatives to the the medical care he was receiving that obviously was not working. After being diagnosed with something known as "LEAKY GUT SYNDROME" by an alternative practitioner, radical changes were made in the boy's diet (GAPS, which is very similar to PALEO). Within six weeks the child was pain free, normal, and off his meds. Watch the show!
Dr. Oz seemed genuinely ticked off about the way the medical community handled this situation --- and described it as being the norm ---- something that is happening every day all over America (I can second that motion). He further described the medical profession as having a far too-narrow focus, and hell bent on prescribing DRUGS no matter the problem. In fact, he said that the relationship between the medical community and CAM (Complimentary and Alternative Medicine) has become a "Civil War" in this country, largely due to the medical community's inability to pick up on new ideas that do not involve drugs or surgery. Like one of the child's original doctor's said (loosely paraphrased), "I've treated thousands of patients with drugs; changes in diet never make a difference". This itself begs the question of how much the average doctor really knows about nutrition (HERE)? But I regress.
There are a couple of things I want to expound upon and clarify about the program --- a program that was mostly very accurate and extremely well done. My biggest beef was probably the fact that Doctor Oz referred to Leaky Gut Syndrome as a "theory". It is not a theory. It is a cold, hard, medical fact. There are well over 10,000 peer-reviewed medical studies on Leaky Gut Syndrome. Only "Leaky Gut" is not what the medical community calls it. They refer to it as "Increased Intestinal Permeability" (or an array of others such as "Gut Barrier Dysfunction," Gut Barrier Integrity," Intestinal Barrier System," etc, etc, etc). Simply go to Pub Med and start looking.
Leaky Gut Syndrome (Increased Intestinal Permeability) is a condition where INFLAMMATION, driven by things like DYSBIOSIS (overgrowths of bad bacteria, H. PYLORI, YEAST / FUNGUS, etc), Hypochlorhydria (decreased stomach acid or the use of antacids and PPI DRUGS), ANTIBIOTICS, GLUTEN or other food sensitivities, ANTI-INFLAMMATORY MEDICATIONS (and HERE), PARASITES, MERCURY, ALUMINUM, or any number of other factors, wreak havoc on overall health. In people with 'Leaky Gut', the Inflammation makes the "tight" junctions between the cells of the small intestine, "loose". Thus, the Gut is said to become "leaky".
As you might imagine, a Leaky Gut allows all sorts of too-large particles to pass through the cellular membrane and be absorbed into the blood stream. Once in the blood stream, the body recognizes these entities as foreign invaders and begins creating antibodies and Immune System responses against them. The early result is such a wide array of symptoms, it literally boggles the mind. Unfortunately, the longer-term consequence is usually AUTOIMMUNITY. (HERE is a list of the most common Autoimmune Diseases, as well as the numbers of Americans with each particular disease. I promise you'll be shocked.)
I am not going to belabor the point, but the subject of Dr. Oz's program is a big enough deal that a few years ago (when I was doing more FUNCTIONAL MEDICINE), I actually created a website about the relationship between the Immune System, the Endocrine System (BLOOD SUGAR, ADRENAL GLANDS, SEX HORMONES, etc) and The Gut. The site was called ENDOGUT, which is now incorporated into this site as a huge blog post. I have a number of smaller blog posts on the subject as well. Just understand that a Leaky Gut can almost always be tied back to a crappy diet and / or over-medication.
If you are chronically sick or SERIOUSLY OVERWEIGHT (they often times go hand in hand), please take a few minutes to look at some of the links on this page. I promise that once you get over the initial shock, you will begin to see the path that will lead you back to health ---- a path that gets easier, the longer you follow it.
PLUGGING THE LEAKS
BLOG POSTS FOR RESTORING HEALTH AND FIXING LEAKY GUT SYNDROME
- EAT LOW CARB: When it comes to diet, we all know to CONTROL BLOOD SUGAR. Sure; many people think they are controlling blood sugar because their blood test tells them so. It is not that the blood test is incorrect, it is frequently being misinterpreted (HERE). LOW CARB or even KETOGENIC diets are the way to control blood sugar (particularly HYPOGLYCEMIA). More specifically, the PALEO DIET is the best way to control blood sugar and cut the most commonly reactive foods from the diet (most of which are GRAINS). Just be aware that GLUTEN and its "CROSS-REACTORS" are almost always involved in Leaky Gut Syndrome. The Paleo Diet nixes them all!
- EAT WHOLE FOODS OR TAKE WHOLE FOOD SUPPLEMENTS: There is a reason that WHOLE FOOD NUTRITION makes sense. Learn more about the difference between Synthetic Nutritional Supplements and Whole Food Nutritional Supplements (HERE is one example of many). By the way, if you decide to go Gluten Free (if you have Leaky Gut, it is critical that you do so), do not attempt to do so without first reading THIS POST on how to do it correctly. One more thing; I realize that not everyone who is seriously overweight has a Leaky Gut. But most do. If you have Leaky Gut and are overweight, you'll never LOSE THE WEIGHT and keep it off without first fixing getting a handle on GUT HEALTH.
- GET PLENTY OF OMEGA-3'S AND AVOID HARMFUL FATS: Be warned that not all Omega Three Fatty Acids are alike. This is why I only recommend PHARMACEUTICAL GRADE FISH OIL as far as fish oil supplements go. As far as harmful fats are concerned, HERE is the worst. Do not be conned into thinking that THIS is a bad fat.
- AVOID TRANS FATS: If you don't have the scoop on TRANS FATS, you are missing the boat on health. Trans fats actually create "stupid cell membranes" that tend to lose their natural "barrier" characteristics
- RESTORE THE GUT'S GOOD BACTERIA: Yes; eat fermented foods. Yes; take a good PROBIOTIC. Be aware that you may have to go beyond this. As crazy as it sounds, Dysbiosis-caused autoimmunity is now being treated with FECES TRANSPLANTS in certain parts of the world. If you do not fix your gut, you will never get healthy. This is because peer-reviewed research says that a whopping 80% of the body's entire Immune System resides in the Gut (HERE).
- GET SOME EXERCISE: Some of you will only be able to do a little bit of walking or stretching. That is OK for now. HERE is where we want you headed as your health improves.
- GET HAPPY: DEPRESSION is a bummer --- literally. Understanding it and fixing it without drugs cannot be accomplished without understanding Gut Health (90% of your "Happy Neurotransmitter" --- Serotonin --- is made in the Gut). It seems that Dr. Oz agrees with me. To understand the relationship between Antibiotics and Depression, click THIS LINK, scroll down a bit, and start reading. According to the most current research on the matter, you can substitute the word 'Depression' for "Autism" without losing any of the article's veracity. Oh, and if you click the first link in this bullet, you'll see that Depression is one of the myriad of health issues caused by INFLAMMATION.
- GET OFF THE DRUGS ---- PARTICULARLY THE ANTIBIOTICS: ANTIBIOTICS are, as I have been telling patients for over two and a half decades, one of the single biggest destroyers of health in the U.S. And in case you were not aware, medications in general are arguably the single biggest cause of death here in America --- bigger than both CANCER and heart disease (HERE). This does not even take into account the massive harm they are doing. Most are prescribed solely for financial reasons (HERE).
No; this list is not comprehensive. But it is a start. For those of you who are are serious about improving your health and your weight, you can hardly go wrong with this list. To move to the next level, HERE it is.
JOURNAL 'PRACTICAL PAIN MANAGEMENT'
PROMOTES DR. DAVID SEAMAN'S ARTICLE
'AN ANTI-INFLAMMATORY DIET FOR PAIN PATIENTS'
I must say that this issue's (November 2012) cover caught me off guard. It said 'Anti-Inflammatory Diet', and is shown as a collage of vegetables and herbs. Needless to say, I was surprised at the cover's topic. But my jaw hit the floor when I realized that the article was written by one of the Chiropractic profession's most well-known and respected nutritional lecturers, DR. DAVID SEAMAN of Florida. I have attended a couple of Seaman's weekend seminars, and his material is not only excellent, but is extremely relevant to anyone --- practitioner or patient --- who deals with chronic pain in any fashion.
It's always nice to be vindicated / validated. I have been promoting an Anti-Inflammatory Diet for almost the entire time I have been in practice (I am nearing the beginning of my 22nd year). Although the article was essentially material that Seaman (a Chiropractic Neurologist) has been writing about in the Chiropractic Journals seemingly forever, it's nice to see that this critically important message is finally making its way to mainstream medicine. Who better to get the message to than pain doctors. And who benefits the most? If the medical profession actually takes Seaman's message to heart, patients in CHRONIC PAIN will often see life-changing differences when they clean up their diets!
WHAT IS INFLAMMATION?
Although most of the general public thinks that swelling and INFLAMMATION are synonymous terms (they seem to always be used in tandem), this could not be farther from the truth. Although 'Inflammation' attracts swelling to it locally, it is actually the word we give to a group of normal Immune System chemicals. Just remember that when these chemicals get out of balance (i.e. there are too many of them in the blood stream), there will be hell to pay as far as health problems are concerned. Just how big a part does Inflammation play in the poor health of such great numbers of Americans? Listen to what Dr. Seaman writes under the header, "What is Chronic Inflammation?".

Interestingly enough, I have seen statistics saying that although we spend more on healthcare dollars than any country in the world both per capita and grossly (we have 3% of the population and take almost 2/3 of the world's pharmaceuticals), we rank at or near the bottom of the world as far as CHRONIC INFLAMMATORY DEGENERATIVE DISEASES are concerned. Just look at the lists in the link. It's easy to see why Inflammation is such a huge deal. But let's cut to the chase. What does Dr. Seaman say about which foods to eat and which foods to avoid? Although this article did not come right out and say it, I can tell you what he recommends for his patients (he says it over and over at his seminars). It is an extremely easy-to-remember rule of thumb. "Eat vegetation or animals that ate vegetation". And don't forget ---- grains (corn -- everyone's favorite 'vegetable' -- included) are not considered to be "vegetation". What Dr. Seaman's is essentially recommending here is a PALEO DIET. This becomes more clear when you look at his lists below.

DR. DAVID SEAMAN'S LIST OF.......
CHERRY-PICKED QUOTES FROM DR. SEAMAN'S INFLAMMATION AND DIET ARTICLE
"Recently, it has been shown that patients are more likely to suffer with musculoskeletal pains and tendinopathy if they also have metabolic syndrome ---- which, is, in part, treated by adopting anti-inflammatory dietary changes"
We know from the scientific literature that the vast majority of Tendinopathies are TENDINOSIS. Although Tendinosis is certainly not considered an inflammatory condition in and of itself, systemic inflammation can contribute to its development.
"Low grade chronic inflammation is now known to be a driver of most chronic degenerative diseases. It is important to understand that low-grade chronic inflammation is not associated with an obvious infection or injury (i.e. acute inflammation) and does not predictably resolve [on its own]."
Just look at the list from earlier in the article. Shocking. And Inflammation is said to be a causal factor in all of them.
"[Inflammation] can generate pain in somatic tissues such as joint, muscle, disc, ligament, tendon, fascia, or epineurium [the fascia-analogous membrane that surrounds nerves]"
I have specific pages on MUSCLES, TENDONS, LIGAMENTS, FASCIA, and DISCS. I have written extensively about the fact that these tissues generate pain in the Deep Soma (HERE).
"Germane to the topic of this paper, it appears that nutrition is likely a key determining factor that generates the tissue 'flavor' of inflammation and, thus, pain expression."
This is a no-brainer you learned in grade school. You are what you eat. However, it is critical that you not miss what Dr. Seaman implies here. Although many people love blaming all their problems on poor genetics, Inflammation is one of the factors that makes up the field we know as EPIGENETICS.
"'Dietary Injury' [is] a term that may be helpful to appreciate how diet can cause chronic inflammation and pain. Dietary injury should be viewed as a cumulative and chronic event, such that monotherapies with nutritional supplements or medications are unable to counteract the 'hits' delivered by a pro-inflammatory diet.... But in making unhealthy lifestyle choices, an individual's body is transformed into a 'state' of chronic inflammation. The patient may not feel this transformation until an obvious clinical sign or symptom is present."
I have said it repeatedly. Supplements are just that --- supplementary. There is no way to correct a crappy diet simply by taking more supplements. The same can be said of medications. Deal with inflammation at the source because trying to cover the vast array of Inflammation-induced symptoms is a losing battle --- a battle that will eventually take your life, and leave you miserable in the process. More on MONOTHERAPIES.
"Diet is most important because the chemistry of the diet is reflected in the chemistry of the cells."
No explanation needed. Again, you are what you eat.
"The reduction in Omega-3 fatty acid intake adds to the inflammatory / painful state because Omega-3s convert to mediators that resolve inflammation and reduce pain. these mediators are derived from EPA and DHA."
This is a good place to mention the importance of EPA and DHA. They are the active ingredients of Omega Three Fatty Acids, and while abundant in High Quality Fish Oils, are found in only limited amounts in Flax Seed Oil. Your body is not efficient at converting Flax to EPA and DHA. This is why Flax Oil is not a substitute for PHARMACEUTICAL GRADE FISH OIL. By the way, PGFO is our number one selling supplement and has been for years. Why do people take it? Believe it or not, not because it is good for their health. They take it because they feel better --- less pain.
"The overconsumption of Omega-6 fatty acids leads to a change in cell membrane anatomy..... chronic joint pain is the diet-derived outcome"
Trans Fats create what the renowned Dr. Janet Lang calls "Stupid Cell Membranes". When Trans Fats are incorporated into cell membranes, the membranes not only get terribly inflexible, they let things into the cell they should not, and keep things out that should be let in. This is a component of numerous illnesses ---- including DIABETES.
"And while red meat is often impugned, studies have demonstrated that the consumption of lean red meat does not lean to post-parandial [post-meal] inflammation [like carbs do], and the substitution of lean red meat for carbohydrates had a blood pressure lowering effect in hypertensive men. While often touted as a healthy anti-inflammatory food, whole grains may contribute to low-grade chronic inflammation. It is known that lectins from all grains, and gluten from wheat, rye, and barley, can disrupt the Gut Barrier integrity and allow the absorption of dietary and bacterial antigens... Gliadin from gluten is known to stimulate enterocyte production of zonulin, which disrupts intestinal tight junctions and can lead to systemic inflammation."
This is nothing less than a clinical description of LEAKY GUT SYNDROME, which the medical community refers to as 'Increased Intestinal Permeability". Although up until about 15 years ago, the medical community denied the existence of Leaky Gut Syndrome, there are now nearly 10,000 peer-reviewed medical studies on the subject. GUT HEALTH is the foundational principal for healing all sickness and disease.
I salute you Dr. Seaman for working so hard to take this message to a wider audience for the benefit of humanity! I would also like to applaud Dr. Forest Tennant, editor in chief of PPM for having the gumption (albeit with a disclaimer of sorts) to run an article by a chiropractor in a medical journal. Hopefully your readers (MD's running pain clinics) will take this message to heart.
PSORIASIS DRUG EASES CROHN'S DISEASE
(Inflammatory Bowel Disease)
A SMALL SECTION OF DISEASED (CROHN'S) INTESTINE
The reason that I am writing about this is not to tell you how many side effects this drug has (there are many; some quite severe). Or that the research was rife with conflicts of interest. You should realize that with Big Pharma, these things are a given (HERE are a few examples). Dr Sandborn and several of his co-authors reported receiving various forms of monies from Janssen (the company that actually funded the study), Johnson and Johnson (most of the co-authors were employed by J&J), PFIZER, Lilly, GLAXO SMITH KLINE, Boehringer Ingelheim, UCB, Abbott, and Prometheus. Sandborn also happens to hold patents on various drugs used to treat IRRITABLE BOWEL SYNDROME. Nope; for this blog post, none of that is really relevant. I want you to notice something about this study that I think is even more interesting --- the thing that caught my eye as I was reading this morning.
Why would a Psoriasis drug possibly help people with Inflammatory Bowel Disease? In other words, what is the common denominator between Psoriasis (a skin condition) and Crohn's Disease (an Inflammatory Bowel Condition). I see a couple of things right off the get go. First, they are both INFLAMMATORY DISEASES, and if you have been paying attention to my blog, you already know that Inflammation is the common factor in practically all disease processes faced by Americans (HERE).
Secondly, they are both AUTOIMMUNE DISEASES. For reasons that are each day becoming better understood, Inflammation from various sources is what ultimately drives Autoimmunity. Throw GLUTEN SENSITIVITY into the mix and you have a living, breathing, nightmare on your hands. And here's the kicker --- once you are autoimmune, you are autoimmune forever. Sure, you can control it naturally. But it is not easy. This is why people who are autoimmune tend to have multiple autoimmune diseases (HERE IS A LIST OF THE COMMON ONES). In order to understand how all Autoimmune Diseases are related to each other (not just Psoriasis and Crohn's) all you need to do is read this short article (HERE).
THE ALL-ENCOMPASSING THEORY OF MODERN DISEASE
Some of this information is way oversimplified. Some of it is probably not quite technically correct. And you should be aware that the various steps in this cycle can be in a different order than I've shown, can overlap each other, or can be skipped altogether. Regardless, this model is accurate enough (and hopefully understandable enough) to get you in the ballpark as far as recognizing the roots of chronic illness. Just remember that in the same way that there is no "Universal Cure" for all physical ailments, neither is there a single cause of these ailments. However, this is great information that will give you something to think about if you or a loved one are struggling with chronic health problems.
STEP 1: INFLAMMATION
Although these chemicals are good (even vital) in small amounts; in large amounts they promote a veritable Pandora's Box of health problems, and can be the result of many different things (GLUTEN, MOLD, YEAST, PARASITES, HEAVY METALS, THYROID ISSUES, a wide array of ENDOCRINE PROBLEMS, SUGAR), but at least in the Westernized world, is almost always tied to poor diet choices in some form or fashion. Just be aware that SYSTEMIC INFLAMMATION (large amounts of Inflammatory chemicals coursing through your blood stream) eventually leads to..........
STEP 2A: THE LEAKIES
I would guess that at least half the American population ---- maybe more, have some degree of this problem, and occurs when the Small Intestine's "tight junctions" --- the gaps between individual cells ---- become loose. In healthy individuals, these tight junctions are just big enough to allow fully digested food particles to get through so they can be absorbed into the blood stream. As Inflammation increases, it destroys the compounds that hold the cells tightly together, allowing the tight junctions between the cells to become looser / larger. This then allows the Small Intestine to become increasingly permeable (leaky) to substances that should never be allowed to get through.
Just remember that this is not only happening in the Gut. Once this junk makes it into the blood stream where your body will invariably recognize them as foreign, it will begin to make antibodies against them. These "foreign invaders" include everything from parasites, to partially-digested or undigested food fragments, to bacteria, to viruses, to yeast, to heavy metals, to chemical toxicity, to medications, etc, etc, etc. The process of getting sick causes even more Inflammation. Do you see the vicious cycle starting to churn? Oh, and just remember this can happen in the lungs, as well as the BBB (Blood Brain Barrier), not to mention the similar layer of epithelium that protects the nerves and spinal cord. There is, however, another aspect of GUT HEALTH. A flip side of the coin if you will....
STEP 2B: DYSBIOSIS
STEP 3: FOOD SENSITIVITIES, INCLUDING GLUTEN
It is absolutely critical to realize that despite most people thinking of Gluten Sensitivity in terms of "Gut Symptoms" (bloating, gas, diarrhea, etc), the majority of the symptoms of Gluten Sensitivitiy will manifest as NEUROLOGICAL problems --- many of which show few (or even no) overt digestive / GUT SYMPTOMS. One of the best examples of this phenomenon is the outlandish number of Americans dealing with THYROID PROBLEMS. As you can see from THIS POST, this part of the process is a well known mechanism for developing.........
STEP 4: AUTOIMMUNITY
"Celiac Disease is what the average doctor thinks of when they think of Gluten Sensitivity. This is not really accurate. Celiac is the manifestation of Gluten Sensitivity as seen in the Small Intestine. But Gluten Sensitivity manifests very differently in other tissues and organs. For instance, in the Brain and Nervous System, Gluten Sensitivity / Toxicity manifests as clusters of symptoms we refer to as Multiple Sclerosis, or ALS, or Parkinson's, or Alzheimer's, or Seizure Disorders, or Neuropathy, as well as Sympathetic Dominance."
In other words, thanks to inflammation and a FREAKED OUT NEURO-IMMUNE SYSTEM, our bodies start picking fights against themselves. Dr. Noseworthy used out-takes from dozens of scientific papers from the most prestigious biomedical journals on the planet to prove his point. To be honest with you, it was shocking seeing so much proof in black and white. And although this idea is certainly not embraced by practicing physicians (yet), it is currently being touted by some of the world's most brilliant doctors ---- particularly the experts in FUNCTIONAL MEDICINE.
Once people's immune systems begin making antibodies to Gluten; for reasons that are not yet clearly understood, these same immune systems begin making antibodies to self (HERE). This is called AUTOIMMUNITY. Unfortunately, once a person is Autoimmune, they are always Autoimmune, although there are some very cool things that can be done to dramatically dampen an overstimulated immune system. Autoimmunity leaves people susceptible to a whole host of ---- you guessed it ----- AUTOIMMUNE DISEASES ---- diseases that tend to travel in packs like wolves. In other words, if you have Psoriasis, you are 'Autoimmune' and will likely end up with many more of the diseases listed in the previous link if you do not get the situation under control.
This is because, as strange as it may sound, your problem is not the disease itself, it's the fact that your body is making antibodies to itself and will likely continue making antibodies to itself until you dry up the source of Inflammation, fix the Leaky Gut, and get the Dysbiosis under control (this includes SIBO as well). Fixing a Leaky Gut will take anywhere from 1-2 months (in some cases longer) and require real effort on your part as far as what foods you eat and supplements you take. HERE is an example of someone who followed our advice to the letter and did it with a condition widely considered "incurable". HERE is a person who successfully addressed five autoimmune diseases and lost 100 lbs in the process, all in about seven months.
STEP 5: RECOVERY
If you want to begin addressing some of the root causes of your health problems, you can start by reading HOW TO SOLVE JUST ABOUT ANY HEALTH ISSUE. The great thing is that no matter what is wrong with you, there are universal steps that must be taken by everyone in order to dry up their volcano and get well. Fortunately, some of you will be able to do much of this on your own (WE EVEN ADMIT THIS). Be aware, however, that depending on the severity of your particular situation, you may need to see a physician who will help you step out of the box.
If you are honest about it, you have to realize that the new paradigms of health and disease have bypassed the average doctor's office, leaving them in the dust. The problem is that most of them are so far behind the curve that they still think they are in the lead. Most are still using the "Better Living through Pharmacology" model (HERE) because, well, that's what pays the bills. The problem is, this model is not only not helping most of our population's chronically sick people get well (HERE), it is often times a significant contributing factor to the development / propagation of Leaky Gut / Leaky Brain Syndrome. But hey; it makes a heck of a lot of money for a heck of a lot of people. Drugs might mop up the inflammation, but they never turn off the faucet where it's pouring out of (HERE).
There is not another profession on the planet with a wider gap between the scientific research community and the professionals in the field (HERE). These two groups within medicine are often 180 degrees opposite of each other. This blog post should more than alert you to this fact. Just more proof of the myth of EVIDENCE BASED MEDICINE. What does it all mean to you? Only that if you care about your health and the health of your family, you had better do some simple research into what it takes to get healthy and stay healthy! I realize that it's a tough revelation to swallow, but the truth is, it's all up to you, and I've given you a starting point. Nope, it's not a "cure," but a place to start making a plan to get better (HERE).
WHEN THE IMMUNE SYSTEM ATTACKS 'SELF'
Face it. No matter how you slice it, the immune system is complicated ---- incredibly complicated. Why do you think that the medical community sometimes resorts to actually removing the autoimmune patient's THYMUS GLAND ---- the headquarters of the immune system --- in their attempt to squelch the out-of-control autoimmune responses known as an "Autoimmune Storm"? A significant part of the problem is that few people in healthcare (mainstream or alternative) truly understand the underlying issues that can leave a person sensitive to foods (for instance, Gluten is heavily related to Autoimmunity --- HERE) or environmental toxins (i.e. MERCURY & ALUMINUM. which are commonly found in VACCINES). As the body becomes increasingly saturated with INFLAMMATION (to understand today's post you need to click this link) the Immune System will begin to attack one's own tissues, organs, or glands.
The immune system can essentially be broken down to four parts, TH-1 & TH-2, TH-3, and TH-17.
| || |
Regulates TH-1 & TH-2 Responses
For reasons that we do not fully understand (HERE), the body creates immune responses to certain foods. It also creates immune responses to things like PARASITES, chronic (hidden) virus or bacteria (see link in previous paragraph), aluminum, mercury, YEAST, MOLD, etc, etc, etc. Whatever the case, this frequently causes a massive, "whole body" (Systemic) immune system response that we call Inflammation. Inflammation is a group of chemicals which are part of the normal immune system response. However, when the body over-reacts to an invader (whether real or perceived), the inflammatory response usually leads to something called LEAKY GUT SYNDROME. But the Immune System reaction does not stop there.
In a final desperate, attempt to stop the invader (whether said invader is real or perceived), the TH-17 System can kick in. It is essentially a Self Destruct Mechanism. If the body cannot kill the invader (GLUTEN, for instance), then by golly it is going to make sure that it follows a scorched-earth policy so that there is nothing left of a particular organ, gland, or tissue for the invader to get a hold of. This is a full-blown Autoimmune Storm. Stopping an Autoimmune Storm is critical because every day that it continues, tissue is dying (THYROID, for instance, is an exceedingly common tissue to be attacked in Autoimmunity).
(Cellular Apotosis System)
If you want any real hope of squelching an Autoimmune Storm (as opposed to simply squelching the Immune System itself), you will have to figure out what is driving the Inflammation and Leaky Gut. Is it Gluten? Is it a parasite (yeah, don't kid yourself --- they are more common here in America than you can imagine)? Is it a latent (occult) bacterial or viral infection (latent virus's are all over the medical literature these days)? Is it a food sensitivity (namely an IgG reaction)? Remember; once we make IgG Antibodies to food, we begin making antibodies to self! Is it a sensitivity to Mercury, ALUMINUM, or some other environmental toxin? Is it an ADRENAL GLAND ISSUE (Cortisol -vs- Melatonin)? Whatever the case may be, the one and only way to find out is to get tested.
TESTING FOR UNDERLYING CAUSES OF AUTOIMMUNITY
The next thing to do is to figure out whether any "Deal Breakers" are present. Deal Breakers are problems that will prevent you from ever really healing yourself and getting better. The main Deal Breakers in dealing with Autoimmunity are.....
- Anemia (HERE)
- Blood Sugar (HERE) & Adrenal Stress Index (ADRENAL FATIGUE)
- GI / Liver (LEAKY GUT SYNDROME & PHASE I, II & III Detox)
- Fatty Acid Metabolism (HERE)
Although it might require some testing from a doctor versed in Functional Medicine, there are any number of things that you can do on your own. Many are generic (eat a healthy diet, get more sleep, exercise, blah, blah, blah). The things that are going to help you the most are specifically geared at changing your diet and lifestyle --- sometimes in a fairly radical way. To see how my SISTER and a CLOSE FRIEND accomplished this, click on the links. For general protocols, HERE is the place to look.
DR. OZ, GLUTEN SENSITIVITY, AND
Doctor Oz's program was about GLUTEN --- a topic he has been all over the map on (after helping get the "GLUTEN FREE" bandwagon rolling, he turned around and said that most Gluten Free diets are a "scam"). In this particular episode, he had professional quarterback Matt Hasselback's wife on the program, who is a celebrity in her own right. She told her story about going from an undiagnosed Gluten-induced nightmare, to real health, vitality, and energy (and fertility). Getting off Gluten literally gave her her life back! The cool thing is that both of them were talking about some of the very same things that I have been talking about for quite some time in my clinic.
You see, for a huge segment of the population (particularly the 60 TO 100 MILLION AMERICANS WHO ARE AUTOIMMUNE), Gluten (wheat protein) is not just toxic; it's incredibly toxic. And it's not just incredibly toxic; it's neuro-toxic. It causes the body to progressively attack itself in all sorts of different and macabre ways --- particularly affecting THE GUT, the NERVE SYSTEM, and ENDOCRINE SYSTEM (especially the THYROID). What were some of the most common symptoms of Gluten Intolerance as listed by Hasselback, Dr. Oz, as well as their "Guest Panel" of three Gluten-Sensitive women? Below are some that they talked about. You should start to recognize that most of these are absurdly common, seem to be plaguing the majority of our population, and affect far more women than men.
- Weight Gain (HERE)
- Inability to Loose Weight (HERE)
- Hormonal Problems (mostly female --- including INFERTILITY)
- All Sorts of Digestion Problems (HERE is the most common)
- Diarrhea / Constipation (HERE)
- Irritable Bowel Syndrome (HERE)
- Migraine Headaches (HERE)
- Insomnia (HERE)
- Fatigue & Lethargy, Chronic Fatigue & Fibromyalgia (HERE & HERE)
- Skin Rashes & Acne (HERE)
- Sugar and Carb Cravings & Systemic Yeast (HERE & HERE)
- Diminished Thyroid Function (HERE)
- Diminished Immune System Function (HERE)
- Arthritis (HERE)
- Autoimmunity (HERE)
Dr. Oz seemed to get this, and communicated it to his audience in typically-excellent fashion. I have to admit, I HAVE TAKEN DR. OZ TO TASK for some of the things he has promoted in the past, but for the most part, this program was good. As good as it was, I feel that he did not take the discussion as far as he could or should have.
Although they spent a good deal of time talking about the wide range of "Gluten Free" foods on the market (most of them crappy), they did not mention the fact that there are lots of people who have Gluten-Like reactions to foods that do not contain any Gluten. How does this happen? Although the mechanism behind Cross Reactivity is complicated, I will attempt to give you the oversimplified version.
Anyone who deals with Gluten Sensitive patients on a daily basis will tell you that many continue to have symptoms of Gluten Sensitivity --- even though they are completely and 100% off of Gluten. This is because many people are so Gluten-Intolerant that they have developed something called "GLUTEN CROSS REACTIVITY". These folks' immune systems recognize certain food proteins in their body as Gluten. Why? Because it recognizes proteins via their molecular configuration. For instance, every type of protein has a slightly different shape to it. In people who exhibit at least some degree of Gluten Sensitivity, their immune system recognizes said protein as Gluten. The body then makes antibodies to fight against this perceived invader --- Gluten.
However, for reasons that scientists cannot completely explain, the immune system can mistake similar-shaped molecules for Gluten, and then react to them exactly like it would react to Gluten. In fact, for many Gluten Intolerant people, these "Cross Reactive" foods can actually cause reactions that are indistinguishable from the reactions that a Gluten Intolerant person would get from ingesting (or simply coming in bodily contact with) Gluten! In other words, if a person has a positive test for Cross Reactivity to coffee, their body will react to coffee in the exact same manner that it reacts to Gluten (FYI, coffee is a common Gluten Cross Reactor). Although there are any number of others, here is the most common list of Cross Reactive foods.
GLUTEN CROSS REACTIVITY
- Cow's Milk
- Quinoa (A popular African Grain)
- Alpha and Beta-Casein (Milk Protein)
- Casomorphin (fragments of protein from the digestion of Casein)
- Butyrophilin (a protein associated with fat droplets in milk)
- American Cheese
For those of you who know what a challenge it is (at least at first) to stay off of Gluten, this list can make people break down and cry. The real kick in the teeth, however, is the fact that many of today's "Gluten-Free" products use these very foods as Gluten Substitutes (HERE)! What's a person to do? It all boils down to how much you are sick and tired of being sick and tired.
There are new lab tests available that will tell you not only whether or not you are Gluten Sensitive, they will tell you on a scale of one to ten just how sensitive you are. They can also test for something called "Gluten Cross Reactivity". Cross Reactivity is a real problem because there are many common food items that act / react just like Gluten in a large segment of the "Gluten Intolerant" population.
The truth is, your best option for determining Gluten Cross Reactivity is to do an ELIMINATION DIET. To do an Elimination Diet, you simply remove all Gluten from the diet, as well as the Cross Reactive foods listed above. And by "all", I mean all. After a time, you can begin adding the Cross Reactive foods back to your diet one at a time (make sure that you keep very detailed records of this), taking careful note of what happens. If you react, that food is considered positive for Gluten Cross Reactivity. The drawback to this method is that it will take awhile to get through the process. The good thing is that if you are positive, you will react. There really aren't false negatives the way there can be with lab tests (I have personally seen a number of these).
It is important to keep in mind that Celiac Disease is heavily related to Autoimmunity (HERE). If you have any degree of autoimmunity (look at THE LIST --- I promise you'll be shocked), you have to assume that you are to some degree, Gluten Sensitive. And unfortunately, once one's Immune System has been primed for Autoimmunity, it can never be turned off again. However, it can be turned way down ---- suppressed if you will, by watching what you eat as well as trying to control other variables. Some of the "variables" that can trigger Autoimmune Reactions in your body include STRESS, INFLAMMATION, acute and chronic INFECTIONS, environmental chemicals (HERE is one that women should know about), and physical trauma / CHRONIC PAIN.
Oh, and in case you are one of those people who has actually been tested for Celiac Disease, but came up negative despite the fact that you have every symptom ----- just realize that regardless of what your doctor tries to tell you, you are almost certainly Gluten Intolerant. It frankly does not matter if you are "officially" Celiac or not. If you are Gluten Sensitive, your body can have the exact same reactions to Gluten as someone with Celiac Disease --- in many cases worse. Testing negative for Celiac Disease simply means that your biopsy came back negative because you did not yet have enough damage to the micro-villi in your small intestine to qualify.
GLUTEN SENSITIVITY AND AUTOIMMUNITY
Because HASHIMOTO'S THYROIDITIS is arguably the most common major AUTOIMMUNE DISEASE in America (10% of the population), we will use it as today's example. Firstly, notice that Hashimoto's is, as just mentioned, an Autoimmune Disease. Remember also that if you have an Autoimmune Condition of any sort, you have a better than 90% chance of being Gluten Intolerant (HERE for PubMed's "Gluten / Autoimmunity" ---- 700 studies). Now let's narrow down our search to "Gluten / Thyroid". We only find 135 studies to wade through here. Now let's look specifically at the 7 studies under "GLUTEN / THYROID / HASHIMOTO'S THYROIDITIS". Because there are actually many more studies than this (no single database carries them all), we can also look on other databases, as well as the web.
Thyroid problems? I would strongly suggest that you read Datis Kharrazian's Thyroid Book on the matter (it's a ten dollar paperback). The brilliant Kharrazian is a board-certified CARRICK-TRAINED Functional Neurologist, and is the world's foremost expert on managing Thyroid Problems from a Functional Medicine point of view. You can also visit the website of Dr. Aristo Vojdani, possibly the world's preeminent immunological expert --- whose specialty happens to be Food Sensitivities --- most specifically GLUTEN INTOLERANCE.
The truth of the matter is that knowledge is power. If a doctor diagnoses you with problem X, you need to make yourself an expert on problem X. Never blindly trust what any doctor tells you (self included) without first checking it against current scientific research. If your doctor tries telling you that "Gluten Free" is a MERE FAD with no evidence to back up the link between AUTOIMMUNE DISEASES & GLUTEN, find another doctor! Better yet, get tested to see if you are Gluten Sensitive and whether or not it's throwing your Immune System out of balance, and into a state of Autoimmunity.
A SMALL TASTE OF THE GLUTEN RESEARCH
In one major study, authors suggested that treating Celiac Disease with a gluten-free diet can lessen the risk of developing autoimmune thyroid disease. In this study, a group of researchers from Italy compared the incidence of Celiac Disease and autoimmune hypothyroidism (Hashimoto's Thyroiditis) in so-called "healthy people", with the incidence of Celiac Disease in a group of "sick patients" (cancer and heart disease) with non-autoimmune thyroid disease.
The prevalence of Celiac Disease in the thyroid disease group was "significantly greater than in both healthy and sick control groups". Although they stated that genetic and environmental factors could be to blame, they added "it is possible that the association between Celiac Disease and autoimmunity in untreated Celiac patients is caused by gluten intake."
Other studies have shown that organ-specific antibodies (these indicate that the body's white blood cells are attacking specific organs, glands or tissues, such as the thyroid gland) disappear after three to six months on a gluten-free diet. Their startling conclusion was that it's possible that "undiagnosed Celiac Disease can cause other [autoimmune] disorders by switching on some as yet unknown immunological mechanism." The study was published in Digestive Diseases and Sciences in February 2000. Too bad your doctor has not gotten around to reading this 11 year old research yet.
WHAT ABOUT TESTING?
Interestingly enough, the Italian research team suggested that all autoimmune thyroid disease patients with Graves or Hashimoto's could benefit from being screened for Gluten Sensitivity. However, the medical community has (not surprisingly) balked at this suggestion. In a 2006 statement, the American Gastroenterological Association Institute, noted that patients with autoimmune thyroid disease are at higher risk for Celiac, but added that "there is no compelling rationale for the routine screening of patients with thyroid disease for Celiac Disease in the absence of symptoms suggesting or compatible with Celiac Disease." There isn't? Go back and re-read the first part of this blog entry! The evidence is overwhelming. However..........
Stop for a moment and think. Because Autoimmune Diseases are so rampant in America, it would make good fiscal (and humanitarian) sense for our medical community to not only to educate patients about the potential pitfalls of gluten, but to screen people with Autoimmune Diseases as well. In fact, in light of what we have learned in this five part series, a suggestion that everyone be screened for Gluten Sensitivity would not seem too out of line. Will this ever happen? Doubtful. Think about YESTERDAY'S COLUMN, Ivy League Professor, Dr. Peter Green's research (HERE), and the monster numbers of Americans with Autoimmune Disease (at least 1 in 5 --- probably more like 1 in 2). If even half of these people's health issues could be managed simply by removing gluten from the diet, think about the tens of billions in lost revenue that would be facing Drug Companies and the Medical Industry. Is it any wonder your doctor has not talked to you about gluten yet?
GLUTEN SENSITIVITY AND AUTOIMMUNITY
AN AMERICAN EPIDEMIC
This discussion begs the question; how many Americans are affected by Autoimmunity? Although according to current (conservative) statistics, at least 20% of the entire population has some form of AUTOIMMUNE DISEASE, I have seen some experts put the number at closer to 50%. What are Autoimmune Diseases? They are health problems that arise when your body recognizes itself (or more accurately, parts of itself) as foreign invaders. Once the body recognizes a part of itself as foreign, it begins to make antibodies against itself and starts attacking its own cells, tissues, glands, or organs. As you can imagine, this can be disastrous.
It's only recently that GLUTEN has been recognized as a causal factor in Autoimmunity (most often via a LEAKY GUT). As far as Gluten was concerned, it was believed that a small percentage of people (1 in 5,000) had Celiac Disease (diagnosed by small intestine damage upon biopsy), and lots and lots of people had Autoimmune Diseases whose causes were largely unknown --- and that was that. Two separate and unrelated entities. We now know better.
Until recently, this phenomenon of immune reaction against neural tissue, in particular the cerebellum, was attributed to vitamin deficiencies and not to immunological pathogenesis. During the past five years, based on overwhelming evidence of immune pathogenesis involving organs other than gut and skin, many scientists have begun to re-evaluate the notion that gluten sensitivity is solely a disease of the gut. Other organs suspected of involvement include: the joint, the heart, thyroid, bone, the brain cerebellum, and the neuronal synapsins..... Although it is believed that the prevalence of Celiac Disease is one in one hundred, for every symptomatic patient with Celiac Disease there are eight patients with Celiac Disease with no GI symptom. In addition 10% of the healthy population have significant elevation in gliadin antibody but no obvious classic disease manifestations. In our laboratory, when the blood of these individuals is tested against different tissue antigens (joint, myosin, endothelial cell, bone antigens, myelin basic protein, cerebellar and synapsin peptides) more than 90% of them exhibit elevation in IgG, IgM and IgA antibodies against one or all these organ-specific antigens. Therefore, gluten sensitivity beyond the gut can induce multi-organ system disorders. Gluten researchers Dr. Aristo Vodjdani & Dr Tom Bryan, The Immunology of Gluten Sensitivity Beyond the Intestinal Tract. Notice the highlighted portions of this quote. Researchers are finding antibodies against all sorts of the subject's own tissues --- as a reaction to gluten. This is the rule with Gluten Sensitivity and Autoimmunity ---- two sides of the same coin!
Oh, and one other thing to remember about Autoimmune Diseases. They travel in packs ---- like wolves. People that have one are just as likely to have many. This is because Autoimmunity is a problem not with the organ, gland, or tissue being attacked, it is a problem with the Immune System ---- of which 80% IS FOUND IN THE GUT. Once the conditions are ripe for one Autoimmune Disease, they are ripe for any and all Autoimmune Diseases!
And women, be warned; almost all of the following diseases affect you more than men ---- most, far more. For example, Lupus affects 1.5 million Americans ---- 90% of them women. And because of our cruddy diets and sedentary lifestyles, Autoimmune Diseases affect a disproportionate number of Americans when compared to the rest of the world. For example, of the 5 million world-wide cases of Lupus, 1.5 million are Americans. In other words, we have about 2-3% of the world's population, and about 30% of its Lupus. Is Lupus serious? A dear friend's first wife died of Lupus over a decade ago. It is the disease that most people seem to associate with Autoimmunity. However, it is just one of a shockingly long list (the list is in no particular order).
LIST OF AUTOIMMUNE CONDITIONS
- Type I Diabetes (The prestigious medical journal Diabetes recently had this to say about TYPE I DIABETES, "There is a growing body of evidence that diet may play a role in the development of type 1 diabetes, through influencing gut flora [bacteria], intestinal permeability, and immune function in the gut; wheat in particular has been shown to have a connection to the development of type 1 diabetes, although the relationship is poorly understood."). I talked about this phenomenon in my blog series on DYSBIOIS. Bear in mind that the same things are being said about many of the other diseases on this list as well. Don't fail to understand why gut health is such a big deal. 80% of your entire Immune System lives in your gut / digestive tract (HERE).
- IBS (Irritable Bowel Syndrome is thought to affect at least 50 million Americans, and is an Autoimmune Disease that causes bloating, gas, cramps, and alternating constipation and diarrhea (HERE).
- Hashimoto's Thyroiditis (Autoimmune Hypothyroidism --- affects as many as 30 million Americans -- SEE HERE. It is arguably the most common Autoimmune Disease in the US. By the way, 90+% of all American hypothyroidism is Autoimmune --- Hashimoto's)
- Grave's Disease (Hyperthyroidism --- same link as above)
- Eczema aka Atopic Dermatitis (10% of the population and increasing, suffer with this problem (HERE). If either parent had it, your child has an 80% chance of developing it.)
- Psoriasis (7.5 million Americans have it -- HERE.)
- Contact Dermatitis (depending on whose statistics you believe, between 1% and 15% of the population has this. If we split the difference, over 20 million Americans have this problem.)
- Urticaria / Hives (an estimated 60 million Americans suffer with hives at some point in their lifetime. A recent study says that, "The majority of patients with chronic hives have an unknown cause. Perhaps as many as 30–40% of patients with chronic idiopathic urticaria will, in fact, have an autoimmune cause." This means that at least 25 million Americans have had or will have Autoimmune Hives in their lifetime.) HERE is my post on skin conditions in general.
- Interstitial Cystitis / Painful Bladder Syndrome (6-8 million Americans have this. A 2007 edition of the Cleveland Clinic Journal of Medicine said that, "Up to 12% of women may have early symptoms of IC/BPS.") HERE is more information.
- Atopic Allergies (40 to 50 million Americans suffer with this problem. More on ALLERGIES.)
- Lupus (1.5 million Americans deal with Lupus.)
- Ankylosing Spondylitis (approximately 1% of Americans have some form of this disease.)
- Rheumatoid Arthritis (over 3 million Americans have this --- HERE is some new information on RA.)
- Polymyalgia Rheumatica (This is the second most common "Rheumatic" Autoimmune Disease --- just behind RA above. HERE is my post on the topic.
- ALS (Lou Gehrig's Disease --- 30,000 Americans deal with this deadly problem.)
- Numerous Kinds of Anemia (The stats on the various forms of anemia are crazy. HERE is more information for those interested.)
- Peripheral Neuropathy (over 20 million Americans have this problem ---- unless you add in RLS, which more than doubles the number. Some of these include things like Carpal Tunnel Syndrome and Raynaud's Phenomenon. HERE is more information on the topic.)
- Parkinson's Syndrome (I have to be careful because it runs in my family HERE).
- Restless Leg Syndrome (Why do you see so much about RLS these days? Because 35 to 40 million Americans have RLS ---- a form of Peripheral Neuropathy.)
- Cancer (Cancer kills nearly 600,000 Americans per year. More on CANCER.)
- Celiac Disease (full blown Wheat Intolerance ---- 1 in 100 Americans affected ---- maybe much more, as only 1 or 2 percent of these actually get diagnosed (HERE). Between 1 in 3, and 1 in 2 Americans have some degree of Gluten Intolerance or Sensitivity. As crazy as it sounds, if you look at the numbers on this list, it could actually be higher.)
- Berger's Disease (an estimated quarter million Americans have this.)
- Addisons's Disease
- Cushing's Syndrome
- Guillain–Barré Syndrome
- Erythema Nodosum (An inflammation of the fat cells under the skin characterized by tender red nodules or lumps that are most typically seen on the shins. This is a common "early sign" of numerous other Autoimmune Diseases such as Rhumatoid Arthritis, Crohn's Disease, Sarcoidosis, etc)
- Gastritis -- H. Pylori Infection (half the world's population has the bacteria, although only about 20% of these have stomach ulcers. This means that about 30 million Americans have Autoimmune Gatritis. More on H. PYLORI.)
- Multiple Sclerosis (half a million Americans have MS --- maybe more)
- Dermatitis Herpetiformis (about a million Americans have this. If you have it, you have Celiac Disease. The American Family Physician Journal said this in 1998, "Untreated, the severity of DH can vary significantly over time, it is presumed, in response to the amount of gluten ingested.")
- Myositis, Polymyositis (a form of MD) & Dermatomyositis
- Ménière's Disease (The National Institutes of Health estimates that about 615,000 people in the US have Meniere's Disease and that 100,000 new cases are diagnosed every two years.)
- Crohn's Disease (between half a million and a million Americans have Crohn's or some other form of INFLAMMATORY BOWEL DISEASE.)
- Raynaud's Phenomena (10% of the population has this problem. The Raynaud's Association says on their website that, "Some researchers estimate as many as 20% of all women in their childbearing years have Raynaud’s.")
- Sjögren's Syndrome (affects 4 million Americans)
- Alopeica Areata (affects 6 million Americans)
- Scleroderma (affects between 300,000 and half a million Americans. If you have this, you will also have problems with diseases from the Rheumatoid Arthritis family)
- Sarcodoisis (affects 60,000 Americans)
- Ulcerative Colitis (affects 1.5 million Americans. HERE is a ton of information on Gut Health.)
- Vasculitis (affects just under 1% of the population ---- 3 million Americans)
- Fibromyalgia (Experts are not sure. It acts much like a typical Autoimmune Disease, but no one has yet found the connection. There is speculation that it could be an autoimmune reaction against certain neurotransmitters. More on FIBROMYALGIA.)
- Hundreds -- Maybe thousands of others that we have yet to figure out the autoantigen.
I would assume that some of these stats flat-out shocked you! Not just the sheer numbers of Americans with Autoimmune Diseases (my simple list does not come close to telling the whole story), but the realization that things like Gastritis, Peripheral Neuropathy, Restless Leg Syndrome, Anemia, and the vast majority of Thyroid Dysfunction are all Autoimmune Diseases ----- most of which are severely affected by gluten! By the way, did you notice that the numbers do not add up. If only 20% of the population is Autoimmune, it means that 60 million Americans have all of the diseases listed above. It simply does not add up, unless these 60 million people all have multiple Autoimmune Diseases -- a distinct possibility. However, I think it makes it quite likely that more than 20% of the population is dealing with Autoimmunity!
REMEMBER: THE DISEASES LISTED ABOVE ARE TWO SIDES OF THE SAME COIN. IN OTHER WORDS, THEY ARE SIMPLY DIFFERENT MANIFESTATIONS OF THE SAME UNDERLYING HEALTH PROBLEM ---- AUTOIMMUNITY. IF YOU FAIL TO UNDERSTAND THE SERIOUSNESS OF AUTOIMMUNITY, AND DO NOT REALIZE THAT AUTOIMMUNITY IS NOT A PROBLEM WITH THE ORGAN / GLAND/ TISSUE BEING ATTACKED; BUT IS INSTEAD A PROBLEM WITH THE IMMUNE SYSTEM ITSELF; YOU WILL NEVER GET YOUR HEALTH PROBLEMS UNDER CONTROL! FOR EVERY AUTOIMMUNE PROBLEM THAT YOU MANAGE TO MEDICATE TO INVISIBILITY, THERE WILL BE THREE MORE CROP UP TO TAKE ITS PLACE. THIS IS THE WOLF-PACK THAT IS AUTOIMMUNITY!
Lets use eczema as an example of this phenomenon. Many children have this problem (10% of the American population), which typically goes away in adulthood. Although the eczema usually goes away, the underlying Autoimmunity did not. That is why left unchecked, this child will become an adult who might not have eczema any longer, but struggles with Psoriasis, Restless Leg Syndrome, Hypothyroidism (90% of which is Hashimoto's), Rheumatoid Arthritis, and Colitis. When she eventually dies of CANCER (yes, many believe it is also an Autoimmune Disease), the medical community never thinks twice about underlying Autoimmunity. This is after making millions of dollars (not an exaggeration!) off of her and her insurance companies over the course of her lifetime. Don't kid yourself. You can tell from looking at the list above that Autoimmunity is a veritable gold mine for the medical community!
WHY ALL THE RECENT
HYPE ABOUT GLUTEN?
While genetics play a definite roll in Celiac Disease, I personally do not believe that they can explain the exponential increase in Gluten Sensitivity. For those who want to play the 'genetics card' with all of your problems (you know, blame mom, dad, grandpa, and uncle Johnny for all your health issues), you need to have a firm grasp on EPIGENETICS.
GMO stands for Genetically Modified Organism. This is a logical choice in light of the fact that virtually 100% of America's corn and soybeans are GMO. The problem with this explanation is that no wheat is currently GMO (at least not yet --- they're working on it). However, all of the gluten-containing grains are bred (hybridized) for high protein (Gluten) content, which is highly valued by the food industry. This extra gluten is then used in a wide variety of products (food and otherwise) ---- products you would never suspect as containing gluten (tomorrow's blog). Today's wheat varieties contain far more gluten than they did even a generation or two ago, and exponentially more than the heirloom varieties brought over from Germany, Russia, and other European nations nearly two centuries ago.
At a recent seminar, the instructor talked about a yet-to-be-published Australian study. The authors claim that there are 6 proteins in wheat that did not exist a mere 20 years ago. This might not seem like a big deal, but it is foreign proteins that cause your body to react in the form of Allergies or Sensitivities (when it comes to GLUTEN, the later can be far worse than the former).
-ANTIBIOTICS, ENVIRONMENTAL FACTORS, & DYSBIOSIS:
If you have followed any of my E-NEWSLETTERS, you know what DYSBIOSIS is. It is the conquest of the "gut" by bad bacteria ---- always starting with antibiotics. Yes; the dirty little secret of the medical community is that even a single round of ANTIBIOTICS can get this ball rolling as far as destroying your gut health is concerned. However, SUGAR or CONSUMING TOO MANY STARCHY CARBS, alcohol, DRUGS (pushed or prescribed), environmental toxins (chemicals), XENOHORMONES, chronic viral infections, and other allergens / sensitivities, all contribute to imbalanced intestinal flora which can lead to gluten-intolerance (you will really see this in Part IV). There are scores of recent studies linking Dysbiosis in early childhood to both Gluten Intolerance and Autoimmune Disease --- two sides of the same coin (again, stay tuned for Friday's blog --- it's a shocker!).
-THE FOOD PYRAMID & EXPLOSION OF GRAIN-BASED CARBS:
The Food Pyramid has been promoted since 1988 ---- the year it was created. Interestingly enough, even though it took the medical community about two decades to grasp the fact that this information was 180 degrees opposite of the truth, it was originally called the Diabetes Food Pyramid because was touted as a dietary "cure" for Type II Diabetes. We have seen in previous blog articles that the medical community continues to resist current research on this matter (HERE). A high grain diet will not only cause you to gain weight in similar fashion to a corn-fed beef, but an FDA-recommended 8-11 servings of grains per day will actually cause diabetes --- the very thing the diet is supposed to prevent! To understand why, you need to understand the relationship between grain and insulin (HERE). The fat-free 90's heavily contributed to both OBESITY and Gluten Sensitivity (not to mention a whole host of endocrine problems), by convincing people that dietary fat is what causes people to get fat --- if a food did not contain fat, it could not make you fat --- a myth still being promoted by much of the medical community a quarter century later. Americans have not eaten their good fats, and over-consumed trans fats and starch. A bad combination (unless you are a food manufacturer, a pharmaceutical company, a heart surgeon, or a hospital)!
-NOT ENOUGH FERMENTED GRAINS:
No, I am not really talking about beer here! In years gone by, much of the bread that people ate was sourdough. What is sourdough bread? It is bread in which the ingredients have been "soured" (fermented). This process "neutralizes" gluten as far as your body's propensity to see it as a foreign invader. The internet is full of articles on sourdough bread being "Gluten Free" (the souring process supposedly neutralizes the wheat protein or Gluten). Be aware that for people who are truly Gluten Sensitive, this is not an alternative you can safely consume (HERE).
-NOT ENOUGH SPROUTED GRAINS:
What do I mean by sprouted grains? Sprouted grains actually change their composition from a starch to a more nutritious and digestible vegetable. Vegetables are the easiest-to-digest foods because they are broken down by vegetable enzymes, not pancreatic enzymes which are less abundant in most people’s digestive systems. The sprouting conversion happens when the sprout pierces the shell of the grain. Once this process is complete, the body can digest the sprouted grains as a vegetable. Picture a grass seed that has begun to sprout into grass coming alive as a vegetable. The sprouted grass seed is then dried and milled into flour. Back in the days of "shocks" of wheat sitting in the fields, there was more time for the sprouting process to begin. Not to mention, barns and storage facilities were not humidity-controlled like they are today. In other words, by the time people got their flour, much of the grain had at least begun the sprouting process ---- a process that dramatically lowers gluten content.
-POOR CHOICES WITH BABIES:
Even though the American Academy of Pediatricians recommends that babies be exclusively BREAST FED for at least six months (and continue breast feeding until at least one year of age), the rates here in America are just under 12%, and not quite 20% respectively. As you can imagine, go back 100 years ago and these numbers were higher ---- much higher. Not only that, but women were frequently breastfeeding their children until they were 18 months or older. Grains were not routinely introduced into the diet until children were older and their digestive tracts better adapted to handle them. Today, all sorts of terribly unhealthy baby formulas are being introduced at an early age, as well as grains / sugars ----- often times in mass quantities. There is also a great deal of research concerning the ways that childhood vaccinations can disrupt normal gut flora as well as causing numerous neurologically INFLAMMATORY health problems (ADD / ADHD / Autism / etc).
-POOR DIETS IN GENERAL:
Diets low in WHOLE FOOD NUTRITION interfere with the body’s ability to suppress immune cells that might be inclined to attack proteins that do not need to be attacked. For example, the body uses TGF-beta to suppress immune system cells that have a tendency to attack gluten. This suppression is increased by consuming whole food vitamin A. A diet low in vitamin A (beets, liver, carrots, etc) can dampen the body’s ability to keep its immune system from attacking harmless proteins --- i.e. gluten.
-POOR TESTING PROCEDURES:
As we said in yesterday's column, the gold standard for diagnosing Celiac Disease is intestinal biopsy. However, Dr. Peter Green, Professor of Clinical Medicine for the College of Physicians and Surgeons at Columbia University studied all 10 million subscribers to CIGNA Health Insurance, and found that only one percent of those with the problem were actually diagnosed. This is far worse than the 1 in 45 that I have previously mentioned. And until recently, there was no valid Gluten Sensitivity Testing. This means that almost 100% of the estimated 150 million Americans with either full blown Celiac Disease or NON-CELIAC GLUTEN SENSITIVITY (which is often just as bad or worse) are walking around without any idea of what is really causing their health problems. All that they know is that they are sick, and feel crappy all the time!
-LONG TERM STORAGE & RANCIDITY:
There are many who believe that much of the problems we are running into have to do with storage and subsequent rancidity. Although it is true that wheat was found in an ancient Egyptian tomb, this wheat was not good to eat. In fact, after researching this subject, I found that the maximum suggested storage time for grains to be between 6 months and two years. The oil is removed in the refining process because it is the first thing to go bad. Removing it gives a longer shelf life ---- and just about zero nutritional value. On top of this, I can tell you from experience that grain is stored with all sorts of pesticides, anti-fungals, and who-knows-what else! All of this increases the potential for developing Gluten Sensitivity.
Yes, I realize that this one is controversial --- what's new? When you look at what happens in the bodies of children with vaccine reactions, the problems seem to cluster around two areas ---- the Nervous System and The Gut. There is evidence that certain vaccines (particularly the MMR) changes the makeup of the gut's normal bacterial flora. Instead of good flora, children end up with more bad flora (not to mention GMO measles virus) living in their guts. This is certainly a big deal because 80% of your immune system lives in your gut. One thing that I can assure you is that virtually 100% of those with AUTISM, ADD / ADHD, or other health problems that have been linked to VACCINATIONS, will be Gluten Intolerant.
I had to add this because you'll see it listed. The scientists who tout evolution, claim that Gluten Sensitivity has come about because grains were introduced only 10,000 years ago ---- not enough evolutionary time for the digestive system to adapt to be able to break them down. The problem with touting evolution for anything is that there is just not any real scientific evidence to back it up (HERE).
-THE BOTTOM LINE:
Regardless of what factors are combining to cause this epidemic of Gluten Intolerance, it is inarguable that Americans are consuming far more grain-based products than is healthy ---- gluten aside. As a nation, we have a propensity for junk food, and most junk foods are a combination of White Flour, Refined Sugar, TRANS FATS, MSG, Additives, Preservatives, and a wide variety of CHEMICALS. Tomorrow's blog (Part III) will show you some of the foods that contain hidden gluten.
