ANTERIOR TIBIAL TENDINOSIS

ANTERIOR TIBIAL TENDINOSIS / TIBIALIS ANTERIOR TENDINOSIS

Although most people have never heard of the Tibialis Anterior muscle, it is capable of causing great problems.  The Tibialis Anterior muscle is exactly where you would expect to find it — on the front (anterior) side of the tibia (the bigger of the two lower leg bones).  You can make this muscle contract by pulling your toes up towards your shins as far as you can get them.  Although many doctors will diagnose this problem as Tibialis Anterior Tendinitis, this is not really true.  If you do not already understand why this is not merely a matter of semantics, please take just a couple of minutes to read our TENDINITIS -vs- TENDINOSIS page.   Although Tibialis Anterior Tendinosis can be caused by a whole host of things including lots of running up or down hill, interestingly enough, it is frequently caused by having shoes tied too tight right on the tendon itself.  Although I see a fair little bit of Tibialis Anterior Tendinosis, the Tibial problem that I tend to see more of (15% of runners fight this problem) is SHIN SPLINTS.
