DO GUN FREE ZONES REALLY MAKE PEOPLE SAFER?
What do you think? Do "Gun Free Zones" help make the American public safer? Although I have not done any hardcore research into the matter, it would seem that the majority of the mass shootings from the past several years have occurred in these supposed Gun Free Zones (schools, churches, malls, movie theaters, etc). As you might imagine, criminals --- particularly cowards bent on killing lots of (unarmed) people ---- view these 'Gun Free Zones' as their own personal Disneyland. And why not? Gun Free Zones are an ideal place to for them to carry out their demented plans, searing their names into our memories forever. We never sit around wondering why one of them doesn't try to take down a police station. The amount of undisturbed 'fun' they could look forward to would be short-lived to say the least.
The truth is, Gun Free Zones not only attract mass murderers like flies to a dung heap, they are based on a false premise. It sort of reminds me of the bumper sticker I used to see all the time as a kid, "When Guns are Outlawed, Only Outlaws will Own Guns". Don't people 'get it'? Gun Free Zones are like Christmas Day to these lunatics. They're exactly the sort of places that deranged killers are looking for. Get rid of Gun Free Zones! Citizens who take the time, energy, effort, and expense to get a CCL, are not the group of people we as a society need to be worrying about. It is absolutely ridiculous to designate an area as a Gun Free Zone and even assume to think that a little "No Guns Allowed" sign on the door is somehow going to curtail persons whose goal is to murder as many people as possible ----- before someone finally shows up to fire back.
Unless the specific area has plenty of armed security guards, the term Gun Free Zone is a moniker for 'Do what you want to us --- we are helpless to defend ourselves against armed attackers'. Instead of doing little more than spending lots of taxpayer dollars on security that can be easily breached by those who are even slightly familiar with the school; or running a few drills that include hiding students in coat closets and praying that armed assailants pass them by, let's tackle this problem head on. How could we best accomplish this here in Missouri? For starters, lets get rid of our Gun Free Zones in Howell County. For those employees of this school district who are interested (Teachers / Custodians / Administrators / etc), provide extra training for those who have their CCL's (Concealed Carry Licenses) ----- and let them carry.
I am not a lone voice in the wilderness on this issue.
There are a lot of problems with this approach [Gun Free Zones], but one of the most significant is this one: It doesn't work. One of the interesting characteristics of mass shootings is that they generally occur in places where firearms are banned: malls, schools, etc. That was the finding of a famous 1999 study by John Lott of the University of Maryland and William Landes of the University of Chicago, and it appears to have been borne out by experience since then as well. December 14, 2012 USA Today article called Gun-free zones provide false sense of security
Banning gun-free zones and allowing teachers to carry concealed weapons could help eliminate mass shootings at schools..... Gun-free zones become “a magnet” for deranged killers who hope to burn their names into the history books by running up a big body count. Lott’s landmark book "More Guns, Less Crime: Understanding Crime and Gun Control Laws" is in its 3rd edition. There is a “very good chance” the Connecticut school shooting could have been averted, if teachers there were permitted to carry concealed handguns. It is no accident, he said, that mass shootings repeatedly have occurred in designated gun-free zones, which attract lunatics looking to murder as many souls as possible before they turn their guns on themselves. WHY DO WE HAVE THE SECOND AMENDMENT WRITTEN
INTO OUR CONSTITUTION IN THE FIRST PLACE?
The Second Amendment says, "A well regulated Militia, being necessary to the security of a free State, the right of the people to keep and bear Arms, shall not be infringed." In other words, our Founding Fathers knew that an organized, well-trained, and armed citizenry was necessary to keep America a free State (btw, 'well regulated' means 'well trained'). The founding fathers saw their guns as so critical to the survival of this nation that they had the foresight to actually write it into our Constitution. Upstanding citizens of this great country who own firearms help keep America free by.....
- Halting foreign invasions
- Being able to defend themselves from all sorts of threats
- Playing an active role in law enforcement (different than vigilantiism)
- Enabling the people to organize a militia system
- Holding governmental tyranny in check
DEFENDING YOURSELF AND YOUR FAMILY
Law abiding citizens should own firearms for self defense. Not only do I think that our soaring national debt will sooner or later lead us into another "Great Depression" --- this one potentially worse than the first (HERE), but our nation is overflowing with crazies that our justice system is miserably failing to protect us from. Just a few days ago a man from New York used an almost identical sporting rifle to that used in the Connecticut killings ---- a .223 Bushmaster rifle with a flash suppressor ---- to kill (via ambush) two firefighters who showed up to put out the house fire that he himself had set to lure them there. For many, this is just more proof that we need stricter gun control in this country. I would argue differently.
This is all the more reason to get serious about criminal justice. We should not be surprised to find that this character (I'll not immortalize him by mentioning his name) had beaten his 92 year old grandmother to death back in 1981 --- with a hammer. Why this person was allowed to live after such a heinous crime, let alone being let out of prison after only serving 17 years, is beyond me. Gun Free Zones and more Gun Control? Those aren't the answer when you are dealing with these kinds of people. Armed guards in every school? Not a great solution either. Not only is the cost prohibitive, but few people remember that the Columbine shooting in Colorado involved a protracted shootout between an armed school guard / Sheriff's Deputy (Niel Gardner), and the two killers --- a shootout that did not stop them from murdering 13 and wounding another 24.
I would argue that it is time to let some old fashioned American common sense take over this situation. We don't need the warm, fuzzy sense of (false) security that comes from supposed 'Gun Free Zones'. We need to put the fear of God back into the criminal element. The kind of fear that comes from wondering if their next targeted victim is a pit bull instead of a poodle ---- a SHEEPDOG INSTEAD OF A SHEEP. HERE is a great example of this phenomenon in action. Give local teachers that desire to do so, serious advanced training in firearm safety and tactical situations. Train them how to thwart the kind of scenario that just went down in Connecticut. A free society can never totally prevent this sort of crime from happening, but we could certainly do a better job of protecting our children by putting a quick end to it if it does.
Taking away sporting rifles and hi capacity magazines sounds great in theory. But would that really stop another Columbine, Virginia Tech, or Sandy Hook? Think about the damage one of these deranged psychopaths could do with any sort of weapon. Our society (violent media, violent video games, kicking God out of education, kids raising themselves, etc) has largely brought this problem on itself. Although there are no simple solutions, thinking it cannot happen here in Mountain View simply means that we're doing a good job of playing the part of the politically correct ostrich. In fact, if you have been in any of our schools, you realize just how easily it could happen here. And what then? Hopefully we have a better plan than simply locking classroom doors, hiding in closets, crossing our fingers, and wetting ourselves.
The Fairview School of West Plains recently made national news, while at the same time making me look like a prophet. You can read about it HERE.
